In Wisconsin they're trying to pass a law that will require people to show a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or state ID, for example) in order to vote. It's supposed to combat voter fraud.
Critics have argued that it's essentially a poll tax, since a lot of elderly and poor voters may not have IDs. Furthermore, they suspect that it's a play by the party in power to maintain that power by trying to lower the number of voters who tend to vote Democrat.
Thoughts?
Personally I don't quite see the big deal. Don't you need a photo ID to register anyway? I can understand the argument that the elderly and poor may not be able to get to a DMV or other such office, but what if they found a way to overcome that? There's an elderly care home near where I live that has an "MVA Bus" come every week or so, they provide license renewal and other services like that. I believe they also waive the renewal fees for poor people in many if not all states.
