that's a big IF. IF they were smart, they'd cease and desist until we packed up and left. now that OBL is gone, what is our stated goal?

The thing that annoys me (???) about people who vacation to foreign countries is the fact that they hold it up as some sort of multicultural experience when unless you've visited Europe you've spent probably 99% of your time in the tourist section with other wealthy (compared to the country) tourist.

It's like going to a resort in Africa and saying "I"VE BEEN TO AFRICA I KNOW WHAT IT"S REALLY LIKE" when you spent most of you time drinking in a resort bar.

Well, I guess getting rid of Zawihiri would be the next main objective. Other than that making sure the Taliban cannot regain control of Afghanistan.

Honestly, whether or not they're suddenly feeling diplomatic I doubt anyone would really want them back.

I don't think people really understand much about the area, it's history and it's people. First of all you have to make a distinction between Al Qaida and the Taliban, something which the US failed to do until recently.

Al Qaida is an organisation that that is made up of multiple ethnicities. Other similar terror networks around the world are still clumped in the Al Qaida category despite having few relations. The only thing these terror networks probably share is the financial support that they receive.

Taliban on the other hand were the ruling party that controlled Afghanistan previous to the war on terror. They are different to the Taliban in Pakistan (who are a terror outfit). The only reason why the Taliban in Afghanistan are considered an enemy and are fighting NATO because they refused to hand over Ladin did not allow the US to enter their sovereignty. They are not concerned with the rest of the world and have no other designs on attacking the west. They are made up of the Pushtun, an ethnicity that is prevalent in AF-PAK. The Pusthun are a tribal people who have their own customs which would be seen as belonging to the dark ages. They are a proud, tough and fierce people. Their children are presented not with Play stations and Iphones on their birthdays but rather with guns. They have never been ruled by another and fought hard to keep it that way, that is why Afghanistan is known as the graveyard of empires.
from a pakistani bloke on another forum. another perspective.

tl;dr is basically "go away"

well yeah but I think that's what they've been trying to do for the past 10 years.

I can't think of any other reason as to why you would send a massive conventional force to that place.

I wish people were more familiar with afghan history before they start spouting off that "graveyard of empires" nonsense

afghanistan has been nothing but the territory of empires for the vast majority of its existence.  Historically, afghanistan was never its own country

Not claiming that

Anyway, I figured the Taliban was ousted because they allowed the country to become a terrorist hotbed more than anything.

the taliban did not exist until 1994.   hardly an old organization.  when it sprouted out, it was just another faction in the afghan civil war.  the reason they got into power was because they took kandahar almost over night but they struggled during the rest of that conflict until 1996.  even then, they did not control the entirety of their country.

the taliban could not exist had it not been for the the huge amounts of support pakistan was giving them.  the taliban served as a buffer between iran and pakistan, both states vying for regional hegemony.  the taliban were able to collect revenue by allowing the pakistani trucking mafias passage on the roads and by the opium trade.

This is already too complicated for your average voter/commenter to understand.

Nevertheless it's a bit confusing, what's your point? That if we leave the place will turn back into a rope for the regional powers anyway?

Warman I don't understand how darwanism hasn't taken you yet. Why are you still here? No here as on this site, but here as in alive.

Seriously dignitas is like 6k and I'm pretty sure it isn't their peak season so you might be able to get a discount if you word it right and try to articulate yourself reasonably for once in your piss ant existance. We could even have a whip round here for donations, I'm sure we'd get a few thousand easily.

Something to think about anyway.
