Anyway it doesn't strike me as an especially mystical reading of the bones, "the US will be run by the very wealthy."

erm, there are just as many counter-examples.

latin america has turned disaffection with the type of 'liberal democracy' foisted on them by colonial masters in europe and capitalist paymasters in north america into a pink tide. with the election of Lulu basically the entire region is left wing.

the age of populist charlatans is starting to look short-lived. trump, bolsonaro, johnson, even scott morrison – all gone.

if there is any justice and respect for democratic norms, someone like trump won't be allowed to re-run. the guy attempted a coup.

i agree that people have every reason to feel angry at the current sputtering of centrist liberal democracy. but when i advocate for broadly progressive or social democratic policies, you poo-pooh them at every suggestion and mutter darkly about 'socialism' and 'taxes'. so that only leaves one direction for the antipathy and anger to go: into far-right kook politics. funny how often you parrot their talking points, isn't it?

there's about 400,000 blue ticks to have ever been created on twitter. not all of them are still active.

if even 50% signed up, at $20/month, and lets ignore the supposed merits of charging your platforms most valuable assets – the power users and influential journalists, etc – for the pleasure of posting and driving traffic to your site, that's only $48 million a year. on a $44 billion dollar purchases. lol. so he'll make back the money on his investment in about a millennium.

"how about eight bucks, steve?" genius!

Is $8 his final offer, or did he just get haggled down over 50% by Stephen King on the first exchange?

If only there were ways for tech companies to grow money other than gouging users for online membership. Oh, won't anyone think of some ideas.

twitter should have rolled out a pro-tier mode years ago, in an effort to monetize its user base.

now elon has bought it as his personal toy and fired everyone, its brand is shifting to twitter 2: elon musk boogaloo. and that's far more polarising and harder for regular users to support with their hard-earned coin.

his desire for fame and acceptance is his own worst enemy. not good for twitter or even tesla shareholders.

If I had a million bucks to spend on frivolous internet garbage, premium twitter 2.0 would be the last thing on my list.

as per some twitter insider:

"If one in five current blue ticks paid $20 a month that would raise just under $15 million a year for Twitter…Twitter’s current revenues (mostly from ads) are $5 billion a year. Musk’s apparent plan would generate about 30 hours’ worth of annual revenue."

so they think 1 in 5 is a feasible proposition; my half was absurdly generous (of course, but i wanted a neat figure for demonstration).

what a business genius this guy is. he's going to harass and alienate the tiny proportion of his platform's most valuable users, the whole reason that most people use and engage with the site, to keep up with rolling news and commentary from the blue-tick population ... for the sake of 1 day's ad revenue.

"help us out steve! we need more than just ad revenue!"

he also posted a screenshot of his email inbox earlier, finding it funny that the twitter in-house system is giving him 'management training' notifications. like, it's somehow astonishing to him that they have a HR process in place for, you know, training competent management when they're onboarding new people to senior positions.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Fgc2U1AXkAA99Ay?format=jpg&name=large

and he spent halloween ... as an adult ... in a costume ... with his mum. he's not posting pictures of him dressed up for fun with one of his brood of 26 genetically selected children. no kids in sight. no, he's hanging out with his mummy. i mean how many red flags do you need?

Right wing media and people in the comment sections are super happy about this deal. They think Elon is on their side and will knock down the Democratic social media industrial complex or whatever. I can't even get mad about any of this for two reasons (1) Elon will eventually prove he isn't on anyone's side and disappoint them. (2) they will eventually be sad and upset because none of what they want will come true because no single man, no matter how rich, will be able to change the superstructure that arose around social media as long as the base remains money + ads.

lol thank you for the wikipedia to base and superstructure, the most fundamental concept to all materialist historiography. i've read marx, my guy.

i'm going to assume that's there for dilbert, who i've been explaining 'it's the economy, stupid' to over every cultural-superstructural phenomenon, for years.

Nah, Don't be like Dilbert. The meme is past expiry. It being November aside, poking fun at someone for something with connection to a horrible scene that took place nearby not even a week ago, not too far from him: hard pass. I don't feel a particular need to add any more to the points and arguments.

i haven’t even been having dreams about the crowd per se. just very lurid and wide-ranging dreams every night as well as general tiredness. been here before.

the seoul govt, which aren’t exactly famed for their approach to mental health, have actually set up phone lines and drop-in clinics for anyone who is struggling with events. wisely they’ve set up most of the facilities near city hall, some ways away from itaewon district.

but i don’t want to ‘follow the fresh snow this ski season’ or whatever. it’s not manly enough. i’m going to stay inside for the rest of my life and submit virtual applications to the territorial army instead.

you can see here how often i am around this area. 100s of photos alone in the last few months in the very square km where it all happened. i took a photo earlier last month in the exact alleyway (last photo). to my immediate left is a 24/7 emart (think 7-11 but korean) that i'd go to for night snacks. i've sat on the little table area they have set-up right there and talked with my friends for hours.

you can also see the thumbnail of the photo i took of my friend wearing a shrek mask. taken literally at the epicentre at about 7:00. phonecalls about the potentially dangerous crowds that night started at 6:30. the crush itself happened at that exact spot at 10:03, afaik.

for reference:
https://onecms-res.cloudinary.com/image/upload/s--9JNMces4--/c_fill,g_auto,h_468,w_830/f_auto,q_auto/v1/mediacorp/cna/image/2022/10/31/20221031-Seoul-Stampede.png?itok=6XXvGez-

so, yeah, i guess you can safely say that a lot of my very fond memories and associations of my home district this last 6 months have been affected.

i've already arranged to move back to my very first district, the one i came to for my first spring in seoul. actually moving apartments has been on the cards for the last few weeks because i leased my apartment in a 6 month chunk, due for renewal on the 10th of this month. so i'm going to spend this winter back in the place where i had my very first and most exciting impressions of living in asia. the place where i have my fondest memories. i don't want to leave seoul or korea directly following a tragedy or anything.

Environmentally-minded Dilbert and his "scathing" comparison of all this to seasonal recreation or whatever is kind of weird (in another way) if you analyze it. A lot of resorts are aiming for carbon neutral. I've read Wolf Creek in CO, focusing on 100% renewable energy, also runs its snowcats on biodegradable grapeseed oil ffs. Does Dilbert run his shop generator on grapeseed oil?

There are probably worse things you could do for the environment than downsizing into a snowmad lifestyle. Just talking about it makes me want to take another trip out. Largely computer-free, on the mountainside all day, spending an evening in front of an e-fire with a book and muscle-memory of mogul mashing.

the following the snow thing is obviously a metaphor. ski'ers relocate to where they can, er, ski. he's accusing me of moving area now that i can no longer party freely at the scene of an accident. because, of course, it's not like i can't already go and party in another district, 5-10 mins in any direction on the subway. i don't need to move out of a nice apartment for that. my point was that this is my day-to-day pedestrian locale.
