yea, but as much "horror" as this is, it's still easier for us to go to the supermarket and buy pre-dead meat.

are you learning impaired?  there are plenty of stores and fast food joints (like chipotle) that dont buy pork from places that use those practices.

really? well, ain't that golly!
but i don't really see us moving away from non-processed - 'humane' methods or not - and not just meat... mainly because of "operating cost"

I'm gonna tell my mom to buy the Christmas ham from WF this year and make sure it's a humanely raised one. If I lived on my own and did my own grocery shopping I'd try doing that as well. It's more expensive, but frankly that just means one ought to eat less meat. It's pretty inefficient food anyway (takes a ton of calories in the form of feed to raise a cow which ultimately has fewer calories than all that feed).

i dont get it... you hard-asses can join the military and kill farmers and civilians

but then when you're back home, an abusively-raised piece of ham gets you emotional?

"The US Army is seriously considering the idea of issuing a smartphone to every soldier, and they're already modernizing one Texas brigade 'through a range of electronic devices that will include not just smartphones but tablet devices, e-reader and mini-projectors.' The company that developed Patriot missiles has already created several dedicated military apps for both iPhone and Android phones, including one that allows soldiers to track colleague's locations on the battlefield. Interestingly, the army is likely to use an off-the-shelf model, heightening the war between Apple and Android phones. Apple's non-replaceable batteries may become an issue in the field, since 'plugging the phone in to recharge isn't always a viable option in the middle of combat.'"

I'm sure the soldiers would love another piece of equipment to carry around the desert, but I think this is a bad idea. I really wouldn't want to see one of these tablet pc's that track soldier positions to fall into the hands of an insurgent, for example.

It's meat. How it ends up on my plate is irrelevant. Why the fuck do you waste your time sitting around crying over a slab of muscle and fatty tissue? Isn't it even more cruel to pull it out of a nice environment where it has free space to roam, plenty of sun etc than to pull it out of a shitty existence? Didn't think about that did ya.

If they deployed something like that it would require COMSEC. COMSEC keys are replaced every few days so they'd only have a very small window to track anyone.

Oh right. That's a wonderful comparison

Here's one for ya. If a chicken is raised in a cage its entire life what else does it know? Does it dream of freedom and the ability to run around in a sun lit yard pecking away at bits of corn to its hearts content? No. Why? Because it's never experienced it.

Stop projecting your human emotions onto animals. You'll be a much happier person. More wise too.

You ever put a dog in a crate? And leave it there for a long time? It's not something they enjoy. You can even compare the way a free range animal and a CAFO animal are handled. Usually the free range one is taken to the slaughterhouse and killed quickly. There are plenty of videos of workers at CAFOs that abuse the animals because... well, because they can.

But I know a lot of people simply don't give a shit about that, and hey that's their choice. But there are reasons beyond being humane. For one, the conditions that most animals are raised in are truly fucking filthy. They become breeding grounds for bacteria, requiring that the animals get injected with tons of antibacterial medicine. Heard of antibiotic resistance?

They're often fed a strange concoction of grain and meat from dead animals. That's one way mad cow disease spreads.

And of course the runoff. CAFOs produce tons of waste that usually runs off into streams, and guess where that water goes? Some CAFOs have little "lagoons" that are supposed to collect this waste, but those can overflow.

But no, the consumer would rather get everything as cheaply as possible and let somebody else worry about the consequences. Give me convenience or give me death, as the Dead Kennedys said.

Comparing a dog who has had the freedom of running around with a chicken that hasn't is apples and oranges.

Also, please state the number of reported mad cow disease infections in the United States over the past ten, twenty, thirty years.

Animals, whether they are free range, or live in cage/pen/whatever only live to be food on a dinner plate. How they get there is irrelevant. If it bothers you so much become a vegan like Jello.
