I agree. Without air conditioning no one would live here, and no one did until the 1920's.aynrandroolz wrote:

When was the fertile crescent ever a forgotten backwater of human culture?
And wtf are you saying no one lived there until the 1920s?
The southern gulf states in the US, and up the Mississippi delta was the site of a growing civilization until Europeans came fucked shit up.

Uh, huh. Well, let me know when the WBC and loony western organizations and peoples start torching buildings and raping/slaughtering their inhabitants. And doing it so often that I become inured to it on the news.aynrandroolz wrote:

stupid, poor, uneducated people get angry and incensed the world all over. let's not pretend all western discourse is rational and civilised.
the killing is a barbarism and the rioting is just a total 'wtf', but the west gets embroiled in this sort of facepalm shit every now and then, too.
people are confusing an act of barbarism with an inherently 'barbaric' culture, implying they are completely backwards in comparison to us. not really so.
Also, I didn't say that.
I'll be sure to cry a single tear next time someone complains to me about how the west is the only one trying to force its culture on other people.

Didn't say it ever was, I said without the oil and the Suez they would have likely blown each other up by now.Superior Mind wrote:

The industrial revolution never exactly went over well in the gulf area. We were unable to run an economy without slave labor. It's still not much better in a lot of areas.
Referring to the 1920's, I'm talking specifically about FL (which is now the same size as NY, going by the electoral college). It would not exist without wealthy New Englanders wanting to see some palm trees. That's why we banned oil rigs. It was a swampy backwater and only after the invention of air conditioning did the population start to increase rapidly. All you have to do is research a little bit of state's history and you'll see what I'm talking about.
We all know these protests are about the drones and bombings and killing of hundreds of thousands in the entire region and this video was just a tiny straw the broke the camel's back. It's funny watching people on the news saying "why are they doing this to us?", do they even watch their own shows? Just the other day we blew up 8 women collecting firewood in Afghanistan.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

Without oil in the ME Europeans would have never had an incentive to invade and colonize which would have allowed for state formation in the region to occur at a more natural pace, if at all- giving locals fewer reasons to conflict with each other.Spearhead wrote:

As for Florida, people have been living there (within the means of the ecosystem) for thousands of years.
Also, how shall we explain the millennia in which large amounts of trade occurred between the middle east and the rest of Eurasia/Africa without the presence of the Suez canal?

Within the means of the ecosystem being the key word. I wasnt born yesterday. The natural environment in this state is fucked and everyone who is paying attention knows it.
What existed then was just the right amount of people for the area. What exist now is over population.
A Pakistani man, one of approximately 10,000 people participating in an anti-American rally has died. The cause of death? Complications from inhaling smoke after burning an American flag. The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper affiliated with The International Herald Tribune (“The Global Edition of The New York Times”) reported:
One of the participants of the rally, Abdullah Ismail, passed away after he was taken to Mayo Hospital. Witnesses said he had complained of feeling unwell from the smoke from US flags burnt at the rally.
The rally is part of protests, organized by Jamaat-Ud-Dawa, the political arm of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba. Protesters are allegedly insulted by America’s unwillingness to punish the makers of the film “Innocence of Muslims.” The protesters, demanding respect for and tolerance of Islam, threatened to destroy the U.S. consulate in Pakistan if the United States does not publicly hang the movie’s producer, director, and “all those involved in the production and release of the movie” (which would presumably include Google and YouTube employees). The protesters also will not be satisfied until the United States makes a “law against blasphemy.”

I'd much rather hear "AMERICANS WILL PAY FOR BOMBING US!" than "Americans will pay for disrespecting the prophet." At least it would make some sort of sense.Spearhead wrote:

You know, many 'great' Western thinkers have also proposed that women and people of certain classes/backgrounds should not be taught numeracy or literacy. There are convincing sociological reasons for this. Not everyone has to be all "woo!" Western liberalism and equality. When you judge other societies using the metric that your own, far-removed, far-distant society has developed, you look narrowminded, and the judgement comes across as fairly asinine. Personally I think women should be equal and should receive educations... but my opinion is a product of my environment, and its own concomitant ideologies. Some societies achieve a greater social harmony, cohesion and productivity when other gender/class-roles are enforced. Western (i.e. British and American) thinkers were even suggesting that the lower castes should not receive basic education as late as the late-19th century. So don't sound so smug. Americans that constantly imply their superiority to the 'barbarism' of faroff regions should focus their attention and energies on matters closer to home, first. 50 years ago the women and blacks of your country would still be doing the proverbial wood-collecting.unnamednewbie13 wrote:

at least rome was truly great and truly pushed along the advance of western civilization. what has america done during its golden days? invented the art of advertising? pioneered consumerism? made a bunch of really really shitty cars? fast food and obesity? well done. america's lasting contribution to world history and culture is being able to sell us all a bunch of shit we don't need and shouldn't want. materially rich, culturally poor, politically bankrupt.jsnipy wrote:

in terms of the western liberal-humanist, post-enlightenment philosophic tradition (i.e. politically the democratic republic), you have made no advances over europe. women's rights, race rights, equal opportunity, social mobility, etc. america is consistently worse across the board for all of these 'social' liberal hotpoints than europe. you are the 'new continent' but you're far behind the old masters when it comes to having a socially modern and forward-looking attitude. especially now that your nutjob religious right are barging back into the corridors of power.Frank Reynolds wrote:

America is way ahead Europe in terms of race rights. The U.K. is the only country that has any room to criticize us. Otherwise little homozygous continental countries shouldn't even try to lecture us on race rights.
