Majority of new jobs pay low wages:

I remember people giving Rick Perry shit for touting Texas' #1 spot in job creation despite a lot of those being minimum wage.

Job growth has been concentrated in positions that tend to fall into two categories: manual work that must be done in person, like styling hair or serving food, which usually pays relatively little; and more creative, design-oriented work like engineering or surgery, which often pays quite well.

There certainly are a fucking shitload of engineering jobs compared to everything else. Browsing my uni's career website is like being punched in the face with regret.

man i wish i actually did well in math so i can do engineering. all the engineers at my uni are graduating with 200k+ a year jobs

theres quite a huge shortage of engineers around the world right now (except in asia lulz).

I somehow doubt entry level engineers are getting $200k jobs.
Senior chartered engineers with decades of experience with a specialisation in high demand typically don't get paid that much, even in mining, and mining is scaling right back.

I can't complain about my salary right now, and I get a significant bump next year when I complete the PE exam.

But anyway, I didn't point that out as a brag really, but more to say 'hey, jobs that require thought instead of muscle memory pay more? whodathunkit?' Analysis work is easy. So is serving fries at McDonald's. Design is hard.

Design/Engineering is hard.

I was discussing work with a chartered accountant, if he makes an error he just writes to the tax office "oops, made a mistake, will correct it in next years accounts, sorry"

If I make an error people could die and my employer bankrupted, at best hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars of investment will be unrecoverable.
Why hasn't this happened already you ask? Its a mystery to me.

Sometimes I wish I'd picked something easy, or found one simple niche within engineering and stuck there, as it is I've worked in three very different industries within engineering - construction, automotive and electronics - and its been tiring, now I'm looking to switch to something new, yay.

I've known enough people who've stuck in one super-simple niche, don't have any real responsibility and are still shit at what they do.
With skill and responsibility come rewards, I could do with a bloody break though.

I've been working in construction, and I enjoy it immensely. Sometime in the near future I think I want to switch over to power generation though. I really enjoyed my internship in that field and they're decommissioning a bunch of old coal fired plants locally which means new builds in the future.

Power generation is the most interesting area to me, and its almost all high-performance engineering which I'd like to do.
Most countries are facing generation short-falls, esp the UK, and there are always efficiency challenges, I don't see how its going to be anything other than huge in the next couple of decades.

New build and life extension of old build, there's always going to be work.
