again, are you stupid? that's a russian promotional video. made by the russian military. every organisation has promotional videos. the point is that in the US, you have military PR and military money being invested into the pop music industry. if it was russia's biggest female popstar striding atop a tank and marching through afghan with lots of hunky russians... i could understand. you are trying to counter the insidious direction and funding of katy perry's latest music video with... a link made by the russian military about their own organization?

jesus christ one simple link/article and its like all the americans here are tripping over one another to completely miss the point.

finding it very weird hearing these songs and seeing these videos. being at university for 4 years with no music television or inclination to watch them. all of a sudden it looks like everyone is into military imagery. makes you wonder who makes these stylistic and directorial decisions. and who funds it. cause these pop-songs are no different in lyrical content from pop-songs 10 years ago. typical pop rubbish. but all of a sudden all of the music videos and visual imagery (watched mainly by kids) is full of the army. hmm.

funnily enough in the wake of the whole uk riots thing rihanna is now making music videos in run-down estates in the UK, proving her urban cool with a (perceivedly) disaffected youth. david guetta is also springing up with dance numbers filmed in some of britain's most notorious estates. it's all such bullshit. you could really write a 100,000 word cultural critique on this cynical crap.

I think you're giving the uk riots too much praise (wrong word). 'Urban' artists have always maintained that relationship, through their own conscious efforts and/or that of the marketing dollars behind them.

It's interesting: megarich artists who talk about wealth and luxury while playing to the most downtrodden classes of society. Damian Marley's 'Welcome to Jamrock' stands out.

no but it has become specifically british. rihanna's last music video (that i have been made aware of) is her in punk clothing with union jacks on a british chav estate. it is very very specifically tailored to an audience. it is cynical and contemptible focus-group shit.

No.

Made the video because "chicks dig Marines".

Who is her audience, primarily?

And she probably thought up the idea after seeing a Marine recruiting commercial.

Maybe she's just playing to her barbadian homelands British roots. I don't think she's playing specifically to a group per se.

"she" didn't think up anything. she has zero control over her music videos, other than what she does in them. why would a major record label - who fund the video - want to make one with military imagery? analyse each scene and shot. it's very carefully doctored and presents the military in a very specific way and light (light being a conspicuous word here: the video is full of angelic lighting and accented highlights). it's very questionable.

kj the video of rihanna is very obviously playing to a demographic. its featured artist is calvin harris, a uk cheesy dance producer. the video opens with a sound excerpt (with a heavily british accent, possibly agyness deyn's) from a dr. martens advert. it's just cynical crap. innocent enough in the case of rihanna, rollicking around a shitty council estate that she doesn't actually live on, but pretty morally questionable when it's promoting the military to young little dumb pop fans.

But we're not missing the point at all (or at least I'm not). We're just not at all surprised. Sexualized violence and the American military's overextended marketing campaigns with tendrils improperly dug into so many aspects of our society are so ubiquitous now that instead of whining about it, we mock it.

it doesn't have such a corrosive effect with alternative music though, jay... it's all to a different end, really, isn't it. bubblegum pop just seems like quite an extraordinary sound/genre/industry to hype the military. i have no problem with musicians approaching war, the military, or any topics like that. what i think is strange is how the military is incongruously slapped onto a music video for a bubblegum pop break-up song. it does not follow. you know that someone in the music video decision-making process has been led down the military route (i.e. by military pr or communications departments).

Why does it bother you? Perfectly normal reaction to go from a bad break-up into a depression that leads to the nearest, easiest escape route. Instead of packing up and moving to California like this girl:

She joins the military. Self destructive behavior is par for the course. Is it better to brush it under the rug and pretend it doesn't happen?

. . . you really are not approaching the corporate/record label decision making tree here with any analytical skill. sure people have break-ups and go to an escape route. why not make a music video where katy perry gets addicted to crystal meth and spends 3 months cleaning the interior of her home? guess there aren't any PR people or focus-groups suggesting that.

I got a hell of a ton of relatives and acquintances connected to the military, so yeah, I liked Katy's video.  For anyone who doens't like the military propoganda?  To bad, I have no issues with it.
