NCLB is the epitome of lowered standards, the "everyone gets a gold medal for showing up, so nobody's self esteem is hurt", failure of the US education system.

It really should be renamed "every child held back".

Teachers teach a minimum syllabus, geared only towards the goal of x% of students pass a standardized test.
So, the teacher has to spoon feed the material to the spastic ADHD kids, while the truly bright kids rot in the corner.
Otherwise, if Beavis & Butthead don't pass, the school's numbers fall below passing, funding is lost, hands are wrung, teeth are gashed, etc etc

that was the impression i got too. god i despise over-standardised cirriculum.

You guys have a rose tinted view of the past. Schools were never amazing here. Jay and rdx haven't been in public school since before the bill was passed. Hardly expert opinion or experience.

The testing side of NCLB is where the bills problems are. But the standardized test requirements isn't the whole bill. The act allocated extra funding to schools across the country. Department of education's funding increased 60% in 2 years of NCLB. It put in place incentives to get better qualified people into teaching. Etc.

It is more complicated than rdx and Jay make it seem.

people will always piss and moan about how education is getting easier. after all, how can any young punks be possibly doing as well as them? i know you're talking about something more specific and nuanced with the NCLB stuff, but the general pissy dissatisfaction is patent older-generation-on-the-new stuff.

Step-daughter is graduating HS this year.

Have had ringside seats for the circus that is NCLB.

AP classes, Honors classes, and college credit classes in HS - all cut to nothing.

Languages: I had the option of German 1-4, French, Spanish, or Russian.
Step daughter's schools only had Spanish.

Math: I took calculus in HS, step daughter's schools don't even offer per-calculus.

Textbooks? Nope, most of her classes don't even issue textbooks. Just half-assed lecture notes.
For a couple of her classes, she's had to borrow some of my old HS or college textbooks to figure out what the school was trying to teach.

The textbooks they do have, are poorly worded, hastily written, full of typos and conjecture, and even at that the teachers don't really use the text.

Yeah I think that speaks more about where you live rather than NCLB. Hell, nothing you typed had anything to do with NCLB changing teaching plans like you initialy complained about.

But I don't want to give up my American citizenship...

Isn't just one area, it's a few schools in 4 different states.

Really?

The whole focus of high school has changed.
No AP, no honors classes, and most classes other than those essential to the core NCLB curriculum are gone.
Then the classes that are left, they don't use proper texts, just crib notes from the standard tests.

Would you like me to phrase the same thing a third or fourth way?

They have gutted the education system, replaced it with a lowest common denominator bureaucratic assembly line, and have abandoned the best & brightest (honors students) to spend time on the paste eaters.

The education my youngest brother is receiving is not any different from what my 28 year old brother experienced in the same high school. You just live in a shitty failing district.

What the hell are you smoking? Schools still provide AP, honor, and college prep classes.
