Yeah, I called your argument stupid because I have PTSD. Right. You say a lot of stupid shit on this forum, but this argument was quite possibly the dumbest.

SM I think you need to do some research on just how horrifyingly bad life was back in the day for everyone bar the absolute elites.

The end of the world occurred pretty much as we had predicted. Too many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons, as always, purely human ones.

The earth was nearly wiped clean of life. A great cleansing, an atomic spark struck by human hands, quickly raged out of control. Spears of nuclear fire rained from the skies. Continents were swallowed in flames and fell beneath the boiling oceans. Humanity was almost extinguished, their spirits becoming part of the background radiation that blanketed the earth.

A quiet darkness fell across the planet, lasting many years. Few survived the devastation. Some had been fortunate enough to reach safety, taking shelter in great underground vaults. When the great darkness passed, these vaults opened, and their inhabitants emerged to begin their lives again.

One of the northern tribes claims they are descended from one such Vault. They hold that their founder and ancestor, one known as the "Vault Dweller," once saved the world from a great evil. According to their legend, this evil arose in the far south. It corrupted all it touched, twisting men inside, turning them into beasts. Only through the bravery of this Vault Dweller was the evil destroyed. But in so doing, he lost many of his friends and suffered greatly, sacrificing much of himself to save the world.

When at last he returned to the home he had fought so hard to protect, he was cast out. Exiled. In confronting that which they feared, he had become something else in their eyes...and no longer their champion.

Forsaken by his people, he strode into the wasteland. He traveled far to the north, until he came to the great canyons. There, he founded a small village, Arroyo, where he lived out the rest of his years. And so, for a generation since its founding, Arroyo has lived in peace, its canyons sheltering it from the outside world. It is home. Your home.

But the scars left by the war have not yet healed. And the Earth has not forgotten.

Witnessing people getting torn to pieces for entertainment. Certainly not more brutal...

No need for what? Pointing out how much more brutal ancient Rome was than today's societies?

Yes, there is a small segment of our society that has witnessed similar events...not for entertainment purposes. A larger proportion of the Roman society was exposed to far more brutality than any similar proportion of modern society. Thus, they lived an inherently more brutal life.

They would have attended that by choice, as people attend horror/war films today to see people apparently torn to pieces for entertainment.

I imagine warfare back then - hacking people to pieces nose to nose to avoid being hacked to pieces yourself - would have been more stressful than taking potshots and calling in airstrikes - that and living in the open and foraging for food at the same time.

Watching a movie--that you know isn't real--is completely different than seeing what you know to be real, in person.

So why are films made so realistic, and when people finish watching them the first thing they say is "zomg that was liek so realistic/fake".

What would be the point if people didn't want to see other people dismembered in as graphic and realistic a way as possible?
If Roman games were on now people would flock to see them, people liable to PTSD just wouldn't go.

There is a distinct mental difference between seeing something horrific you know is fake and seeing the same thing, knowing it's real. Particularly if it's happening in front of you, rather than on a screen.

And I seriously doubt that if the equivalent of Roman games were offered today that people would "flock to them". Probably a small subset of society would...and they likely have issues, anyway.

Romans flocked to them, why wouldn't the people of today?

Seeing something fake happening to someone compared to seeing something real happening to someone of no value - its not a huge difference.

Your last bit explains a large difference.

Unless you start getting into hard-core caste systems, that concept doesn't exist--particularly in the West.
