It always has been a tool for protecting the economic interest of it's citizens (which common defense falls under). The Tripolitan War was a full declared war to protect U.S. shipping. It wasn't a war for defense it was a war to protect economic interest. The war was carried out by the people who wrote the Constitution.Jay wrote:
It doesn't matter. The United States military is not a tool to be used by business to further their interests. The purpose of the military is spelled out right there in the preamble of the Constitution: "provide for the common defence" does not mean maintaining a multi-million man army.
Without Western money China would still be a dirt poor country. Same with India and many other developing countries. It's an economic fact that their foundations were built with Western money.Dilbert_X wrote:

Investing is risky. Investing in an unstable market is risky. Investing in overseas markets is also risky. Investing in unstable overseas markets is even more risky. Fear of losing a large investment because of someone like Hugo Chavez feels like nationalizing an industry or some African dictator decides to seize property for himself scares investment away.
Having the U.S. hovering in the background protecting overseas investments with military force allowed overseas investment to flourish. It reduces the overall risk involved in international trading.
Of course, no-one can build anything without US dollars.

Because the U.S. is the only part of 'The West' and not Europe or Australia.
You're taking it out of context. They had attacked American citizens.Macbeth wrote:

America's for profit wars always do start with a supposed attack.
Start learning Japanese, you're going to be finding a pretext to attack them next - again.

Fuck Israel
I wouldn't call the war against the Barbary Corsairs a war for profit. We, being a new and poor nation, refused to pay protection money. They seized our shipping, we sacked Tripoli. They were the aggressors.Dilbert_X wrote:

And now the world pays America protection money to be allowed free trade
Fuck Israel
Multinational agreements and institutions do far more to facilitate free trade than military force nowadays. This isn't the 1920s.
Unipolarity is part of what got us into the economic mess we're in today. It's unsustainable for one country to handle all of that without some sort of economic support from those it aids...and I don't think tributes are going to go over too well in the 21st century.
A multipolar world would probably be the best situation, with thriving peer economies in several nations. One would hope that the world is past the expansionist aspirations of the 18th-20th centuries at this point.

You've missed the latest GOP "debates" have you? Just about the only one who doesn't want to bomb Iran is Ron Paul.FEOS wrote:

Our closest ally is actually the UK. And we did the square root of fuckall when they had that dust up with Argentina.AussieReaper wrote:

If Israel hits Iran, our biggest concern will be containment and force protection. Because Iran won't hit back at Israel directly--they'll hit US interests/bases in the region they can effect more easily, even if we have nothing to do with the Israeli action.
