Houston, at the least the city itself is pretty shit. There's some nice neighborhoods outside of Houston if you're made of money. Dallas has some tech appeal but inner city there isn't too much nicer than Houston.
Austin is the liberal center of Texas and is a big center for live music and art. Definitely has the most character of the three. University of Texas (at Austin) has a giant amount of foreign students as well so it's kind of a culture mix too.

It's a nice place to go on vacation but that's about it - you're practically in Mexico at that point. I've stayed pretty much IN Corpus once, it was awful. Not quite "the ghetto" but it wasn't a place where you'd want to roll around in a nice vehicle.
