well the one that's my actual name in that format is just for applications for jobs/internships/w/e

not going to use that one to register for forums and accounts on websites.

also a lot of academic addresses have heavy spam protection that often blocks shit from some addresses (some prof couldn't get emails from interia.eu/interia.pl addresses that a colleague in poland used), I've heard some horror stories about that.

we get to keep our .ac.uk accounts indefinitely. They're not that great in terms of, erm, nice-to-read-ness though. They're made up of initials, course start date and then some random letters/numbers. so mine is [email protected]. You don't get [email protected] or [email protected] until you're staff or a phd student.

@Surgeon we have 17k students and 7k post-grad students

I've got a dozen or so different gmail accounts for different purposes that all refer to a real e-mail address, so anything that's mailed to my seriousface e-mail gets put it its own category in my inbox. easy enough to keep my mail sorted
