I feel as though I should watch this but I'm so damn tired and it's not for another hour. I guess I'd regret it if I didn't.

lol, I have the Today Show on (as well as Kerry's link) and of course they're talking about Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly, and they said the Giffords incident was an "accident".

What.

God that's so cool and so sad. I can't believe there's only one more of these bad boys... and then it's over. Funny how I wanted to be an astronaut when I was little, I'd be right pissed if I stuck with that plan and nobody told me the Space Shuttle program was ending before I'd even graduate college.

Are they definitely building some sort of successor, or has the government basically killed NASA for the time being?

They canned the Constellation program which was supposed to be the successor. NASA's not dead, they'll still be doing satellite launches and stuff like that, just human space flight is for now unless it's done by the private sector (Space-X, Virgin Galactic).

Kerry, correct me if I'm wrong on any of this.

great, so glad we'd rather fund welfare queens than something that actually advances humanity

The Russians are still flying and I believe the Chinese are also looking to get in the game. I'm sure Kmar will correct me or add more information, though.

compare the costs of NASA to the annual budget of the Pentagon and then come back

would you rather finance a military that is fighting pointless wars and killing thousands or an organization dedicated to exploration, research and overall technological improvement through peaceful means?

Blame the lawmakers and the POTUS for setting the priorities, not the military for doing its job.

And that has fuckall to do with his welfare comment, btw.

The last three presidents have had grand plans for nasa.. each plans financing slated to start only after they leave office. They want credit for the vision but wont back it with money.

China and Russia are both expanding their presence in space.. beyond low earth orbit.
