The unmotivated usually don't look to the military. It's a regimented routine that requires discipline (like schooling). Lack of motivation is typically a character flaw amongst the dim sparks.

That's straight up bullshit. The infantry does consist of people that aren't clever enough to actually make success elsewhere.

Some yes, but what is even more "straight up bullshit", is that the military, the army or just the infantry, is made up of nothing but "dregs".

Perhaps you should trace the origin of the exchange you are jumping in to. You won't look as foolish.

I'm somehow doubtful that smart people would plan to do foot patrol in Afghanistan.

Theres plenty of them.  Believe it or not, but a lot of people dont just join because they have nothing else they can do.

Irrelevant. What Dilbert said doesn't mean what you just said in anyway is correct. If you are a grunt in the infantry you do so because you have nothing else worth while to do. Stop being a pedant over what Dilbert said, he has already admitted that he wasn't referring to the entire military.

Well that's not exactly true here. Getting into the army, even as a grunt rifleman is actually very competitive. It is much harder to get into the army than it is to get into any other job with low educational requirements.

Do you actually believe that every person that joins the army as a grunt stays a grunt their entire life? Most go on to have successful lives in other areas...

Really? The fact that I didn't mention, let alone single out the infantry is not relevant to your rant against infantry personnel?


I was speaking about the military as whole. What is wrong with getting financial help with your schooling? What is wrong with having your medical bills paid for? What is wrong with taking advantage of the VA loan program? Those things are very helpful, especially in our current lending environment. Smart people plan for the future, and they don't sink themselves in a mountain of debt as young adults. Smart people don't generalize and assume to know what motivates hundreds of thousands of people.

Not in this counrty.

Are we talking about your average grunt? Why would people try put them down, they're not expected to be extraordinarily intelligent, they're supposed to do their jobs. They do them good. Infantry NCO's and officers on the other hand do have certain expectations to live up to.

People in the SF however are usually above average intelligence. I don't see how people in the infantry would be more stupid than anywhere else in the armed forces. Actually, I'd argue that being able to cope with all the shit you get thrown at you (disproportionally much compared to other people in service) does require you to stay sharp and concentrated for extended periods of time.

ya i guess.  i mean i have an advanced pilots license, advanced instructor license, airframe and powerplant mechanic, flight dispatcher license, ...oh and a bachelors degree.
