Edit - Nothing is likely to do more harm to future generations than the garbage that a school lunch or a dietician would serve up. I'm sorry, but it's fucking food. If it doesn't taste good it's pointless to consume it. Sodium reduction by 5% annual? Ok, excess sodium is bad but salt is what brings out the flavor in foods. American health food culture is possibly the worst thing on the planet. Fucking schmucks obsessed with their looks and projecting their self loathing onto others.

When I was a kid, fridays were pizza day in public school. You got a slice of shitty Elio's pizza, a fruit cup with some overly sweet syrup and a little paper cup full of salad with way too much vinaigrette on it. I dunno, maybe that school has Gordon Ramsey cooking in the back or something. One of the few things I learned in public school is that the last people on the planet you want to entrust your childrens health and welfare to are the rejects that work in the lunch room.

Ah

My private school used to have a shitty food service contract with Aramark. Then one year they upgraded to an awesome one, the food was fantastic most days. The few days it wasn't were "sandwich days" aka making your own sandwich (or salad).

UMD's dining is meh. Some good meals at the 'daily special' but everything else gets very old very quickly.

My first year at college they had an italian food section in the back where only the upper classmen were allowed. I used to go back there all the time for anti-pasto and halfway decent pasta. They turned it into a sandwich and pizza bar the next semester and it was dead from then on.

I honestly don't think Diet has anything to do with it, I think it's so much more that Kids Just don't play outside anymore.

I remember I was pissed when going to middle school from 5th grade that we only had 1 recess period that was pretty much mixed with lunchtime, but gym was alright. I think the major reason I ran track in high school was just so I'd be exercising (cause I'm very unmotivated and don't push myself when I'm in charge) and got to hang out with people as a bonus. It certainly wasn't because I was good...

Yeah, this is pretty much it. When was the last time you saw a group of kids out in the street playing baseball or something? It just doesn't happen anymore. If kids do anything for social interaction it's going over each others houses and sitting on the couch or in front of the computer together. This is definitely one aspect of technological advancement that I think sucks.

It still happens. In my former house in Stony Brook, the asian kids (surprise surprise, it's Stony Brook) across the street were always out on the street playing baseball or catch or something similar. In the apartment complex I live in now when I'm home from college in Port Jefferson, the small group of about 8-10 kids is ALWAYS playing outside. There's no doubt certain kids do nothing but sit on the computer or play video games all day, but I think it's incorrect to paint kids today with such a broad brush.

Of course it is. I wasn't saying all kids are like that. I've just been on this planet long enough to note the difference between pre-video game kids and post-video game kids. The difference is stark and it got even worse after everyone got a PC and the internet.

That's only part of it of course. The media has made parents so terrified of kidnappers and child molesters and people putting glass in candy that parents have really clamped down on their kids too. Yet another reason to hate the ratings driven media.

I mean, I've been here 11 years less than you and I've seen it too. Even with myself. I just don't think it's as rampant as the media leads to believe. If you were to look in an average class in my high school, maybe 3 kids out of 25 would be overweight, and never really that bad.

Maybe it's just different out here. One of the lowest crime rates in America, highest paid cops, very rarely hear of a murder (except for that pesky serial killer who has a thing for hookers). I dunno, there's no "fear" out here. Kids play in the street here all the time, go walking at night down a main road like 347, 25A, etc.

Canadian maple syrup is a super food now, just give them a shot of it and they are good for the day.

Not to be a big downer and just blame it on the internet. I think the fact that there's no stay at home parents anymore has alot to do with it as well.

add to it, that the school I am sure chose the lowest bidder for supply. What would that say as to the quality?
