Has anyone given a reason yet as to why we're involved in Libya, but not anywhere else? I can't think of another example of when the West or the UN has gotten involved in a civil war without something additional going on like ethnic cleansing. And there are countless examples of situations that we've avoided getting involved it. So what are we doing with all these airstrikes? Why do we think it's any of our business?
I've been asking this same question here all day now.
"Ah, you miserable creatures! You who think that you are so great! You who judge humanity to be so small! You who wish to reform everything! Why don't you reform yourselves? That task would be sufficient enough."

no good reason can be given.
It's EU's backyard, media pressure, public opinion, improving the relations with the ME to further progress in Afghanistan/Iraq.
Least, that's what I think the reasons are.

Oil, PR and to prevent floods of refugees sweeping across Europe.

On the other hand if we did not intervene the arab league would hate our guts.
The oil argument doesn't even make sense - no ground troops are deployed, who's gonna be there to steal it?

It's not about stealing it, it's about consistency of supply. France and Italy buy LOADS of oil from Libya - why do you think France are so keen to fuck him over?Shocking wrote:

Fair enough, I suppose it helps build relations with the next government, too.

Well, why did they want a NFZ? The rebels have shot down 20+ aircraft from a post I read here. Looks like they're doing fine.
If it's to protect the civilians or help with the "Revolution" then why the heck isn't the world concerned about protecting the protesters in Bahrain where they were being slaughtered?

Its Obama bringing "hope" and "change" to America, ya know, living up to his Nobel Peace Prize.
libya is near EU+ we dont like gadaffi + UK and France following cuts to military want to prove they're competant.

also America isn't contributing much other than a token effort so if we could avoid obama is bad thread that would be n1

Actually you make a very good point there....FatherTed wrote:

Cameron and Sarkozy trying to show that their British/French alliance project, where we'll be sharing carriers and stuff, works properly.
But oil, immigration and the good PR this is bringing with the ME are all factors.
Heyyyyyy someone got it..Jay wrote:

yes but im talking per capita and whats being said on a governmental level. the US is saying this is naughty hrrrrrrr eat some tomahawks, France and the UK are saying 'we will fucking wipe you out if you scratch some goat herder i swear to god' Long-term (i hope there won't be a long term) the US will not be involved in this in any significant way - this is overall an EU problem.11 Bravo wrote:

I think most americans would have no objection to cutting the defense budget by at least 2%, tbh.

all well and good, but the US gov wants the UN (on face at least) so you are there and basically deal with it. this will not be an Iraq/Afghan11 Bravo wrote:

I'd rather cut socialist programs than cut the military tbh.
The US is constantly doing live-fire military drills anyway. I don't see why they shouldn't do a live-fire exercise on Libya.
