FLASH: Radiation too high for normal work at control room of No.4 reactor of Fukushima Daiichi plant - Kyodo

That was reuters.. so what does it mean? Normal work?

TBF the first containment vessel breaking on the reactor is really not very good news at all, and probably sent a few alarm bells ringing through a lot of people's heads.

A long way to go before we get to Chernobyl-like disasters yet though. Long, long, long way.
I really don't like how everyone's scetching the scenario that the meltdown can melt through the secondary, third and fourth containment vessels. These were all built to stop a nuclear melt down in it's tracks. They don't just fail.

More from Kaku: I suggest: exercise the "Chernobyl Option," i.e. repeat what the Soviets did and entomb the reactors in concrete  forever. It worked in 1986

i.e. Put the Japanese Air Force on standby alert: Assemble helicopters and thousands of tons of sand and concrete, and bury the reactors.

Guessing they want to try as long as possible to save the situation though.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Well that's actually a very good idea. Just let choppers fly over the place continouosly and entomb that reactor. The pilots shouldn't really be in that much danger either so now there's time to do something.

more, as they're going to be flying directly over the reactor. No lethal dose though, granted the containment vessels all do their job.

I wonder what that would do to the ground.. the soil and water/food supply.

not much:

This is the basic principle of a BWR nuclear reactor, given that the central structure holds, that meltdown isn't going to go anywhere - especially not down.

Pretty sure the risk of radiation getting into the ground has been removed by a massive lump of concrete that should contain a meltdown. I was just thinking if there is a load of radiation in the area due to the containment cracking or a meltdown or something, it'd make it hard to get near to go with the encase it in concrete option.

Yesterday I read that the pressure vessel had been cracked, the rest should still be intact.

I heard that there is another problem that could get even worse than a meltdown:
They have been storing nuclear fuel form the last 20 years in holding basins next to the plant, and the cooling water level is sinking. Some 60,000 rods in total, rather tightly packed in containers.

If they're already having problems with energy and cooling water supply, and are now also abandoning the control rooms, I'm wondering who will take care about that.

I think the main concern now is activation of saltwater and valve blow out.  Having activated water/steam billowing out would be a bit messy.

Why did they evacuate all but 50 workers? Is all the increased radiation due to earlier venting?

I have no idea, but the hydrogen explosions must have damaged the venting system so I don't think they can keep the releases under control. Usually they try to filter out most of the radioactivity before releases, too, dunno if that filter failed as well.

If the venting has failed surely anything expelled would be fairly light and have a short half-life?

I just read at the ny post that their has been "crucial" damage to two of the reactors containment walls. Its the ny post.. so look for an additional source http://m.nypost.com/p/news/internationa … ZVcGT3KVBJ

Ya but, these people are inside the building, it's really going to affect them if you stand that close. + the pressure vessel cracked so water is leaking and they can't keep the core cooled. More radioactivity.

"The warning comes after the plant was rocked by a third blast, which appears to have damaged one of the reactors' containment systems for the first time."
BBC. Wish these people would get their stories straight.

Right now they have suffered another power failure. So they are going to chopper in water to pour over..

Edit: TEPCO: option of hauling water via helicopter into the reactors to cool off the waste pool fail due to power shortage  http://bit.ly/egGNh2

What part of the containment system is damaged though?

the the pressure vessel, the drywall, the steel drywell + concrete/graphite bed? the basemat, the outer concrete/graphite wall?

I'm thinking probably the pressure vessel, at worst part of the first concrete bedding. I can't possibly imagine all of them failing. That is, actually, impossible. Not just a "small chance it might not work" but full blown impossible.

Nothing is impossible, the odds are just so incredibly low it may as well be
BBC seem to be fairly reliable for reporting this, but they're also slow so stuff might have happened they haven't updated. Saying that the article was updated "15 March 2011 Last updated at 12:36 " So i'm guessing not.
