The inherent nature of sentient life is conflict, from the smallest organisms all the way through to us. I'll bet there hasn't been a single year throughout human history that there's not been some kind of fight going on, be it a major war or a small gangland skirmish. That in mind we've only the had the capacity to wipe ourselves out for a fraction of our existance, like what 75 years or something? I think it's inevitable a nuclear weapon is used, it just depends how it goes from there in terms of retaliation. I know all about MAD, but I just think we as a species only truly learn our lessons after we've commited an act.

True, I too feel that it's only a matter of time before people start flinging nukes but I don't think that would mark the end of the species; we've survived through disasters like this, and I don't believe people will be stupid enough to let it get to MAD.
If anything, stephen hawkings was right in saying; either move to outer space or end up extinct. That will probably be the major challenge of the century.
