A university in the US state of Utah has suspended a star basketball player for having pre-marital sex with his girlfriend in violation of the school's strict "honour code".

Brandon Davies was dropped after admitting the transgression to staff at Brigham Young University (BYU).
His team, ranked 3rd in the nation in college basketball, went on to lose against an unranked team on Wednesday.

The BYU honour code requires students to be "chaste and virtuous".
BYU officials have defended the decision after the news was first reported by the Salt Lake Tribune, saying that students are fully aware of the rigorous code, and often choose the school because of it.

"We live this. This is who we are," said Tom Holmoe, BYU athletic director.

The Utah-based university is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. All students agree to abide by the honour code, which reflects Mormon values.
The code includes prohibitions on drinking, smoking, drugs, tea, coffee, swearing and sex, as well as a commitment regularly to attend church.

Where will this go? Looks like a freedom of expression issue.

Seems incredible to me that a University could restrict adults in this way, voluntarily or not, and another argument for maintaining separation of church and state.

if he were smart (he wouldn't have signed on with byu, but anyways) he would transfer to the university of utah. they have no such restrictions, and he would be playing for a rival.

You enter into it freely. It's not forced on you or anyone else. If some private university decided to be white only there isn't anything the federal government can do. It's private. Same as any club that wants to restrict its membership to people with polka dot tattoos. Completely legal.

They aren't doing anything wrong. If they were forcing people to sign the contract against their will it would be an issue. As they are adults, they can sign any pledge they want. They sign a pledge saying they won't drink, do drugs, or have sex outside of marriage. It's not even remotely illegal.

I don't think any University anywhere else in the world would be able to enforce this, I've never heard of Universities requiring students to sign contracts either.
