i think you have a gross misunderstanding of the way addictions manifest.

Heroin addicts feed their addiction through panhandling, sex work, regular jobs, theft, etc. No different than a gambling addict.

You don't walk in to the casino, bet $80K then say, "ill pay you when i get the chance".

the danger with gambling is that vast amounts of money are quite abstract. in the heat of the moment you can make some incredibly rash decisions. it's a very impulsive addiction. a heroin addiction is more like a long slow decline.

On dating apps I basically have only two requirements: don't be obese. Don't be black.

This results in me matching with older white women all the time. Like women in their 40's and 50's. Divorced with kids. I don't know what the hell these women are thinking when they click like on my profile. I rarely match with girls my own age. Shit is weird and disappointing.

yes but you also don't hear much about grown men getting into the back of a ford pinto to suck some old wrinkly fuck's schlong so they can go bet on greyhounds down at the local track.

Addiction is bad. Addictions manifest in different ways. It's a bit of a pointless argument to say 'x' addiction is worse than 'y' in that regard.

You like cocaine so you bend all your rationalisations around it.

Most despots have been arts enthusiasts, you can't avoid it.

i don't take cocaine often, if anything it's massively exaggerated here because you never stop responding to it. yes, people take it and in social situations it is a fun addition.

your proof of that corollary needs a little work. a lot of people are art enthusiasts, dilbert. i know this is very surprising to you.

I am allowed to have taste in women. In fact I am very open to anything but 7% of the U.S. population.

Ken, Uzique, and me all fit the definition of mild substance abuse disorder according to the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders". I am willing to admit to my struggles. Ken and Uzique aren't even though their drug use was harder and had more dramatic effects on their lives than me.

Oh and I will only admit to being a drug user online. I always tell my students to stay away from drugs and how dangerous they are. The hypocrisy absolutely cracks me up.

the only one of us here taking daily medication for their cracked head is you. about the most trouble i ever got into through drugs was a love triangle meltdown in my student accommodation when i was 19. a spectacular show it was, too. but don't make out like drug use has had a 'dramatic effect' on my life. i've taken all the drugs i want throughout my 20s and i've never been unemployed or off work. you have pretty strange definitions. haven't you been committed to an asylum multiple times? keep hitting the weed bro. i hear it's great for psychological problems.

You've been arrested and hospitalised, doesn't sound like its gone swimmingly.

But for timetabling issues in Parliament you'd have a criminal record which might have affected your career.

I have no problems admitting addiction. It's not a scarlet letter I am afraid of wearing. I have an addictive personality and some of it is genetic - I was left to figure that part out on my own, which is a very big reason i support open and honest communication about addiction.

You talk about hitting a vape pen like it's the best thing in the world. How about you understand how it impacts you and why you like it, and make an honest conclusion about whether or not those answers are ok with you?

Now my addiction is owning fools like you on the basketball court

Admitting your problem is the first step to recovery.

Substance use disorders span a wide variety of problems arising from substance use, and cover 11 different criteria1 :

1. Taking the substance in larger amounts or for longer than you're meant to.
2. Wanting to cut down or stop using the substance but not managing to.
3. Spending a lot of time getting, using, or recovering from use of the substance.
4. Cravings and urges to use the substance.
5. Not managing to do what you should at work, home, or school because of substance use.
6. Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships.
7. Giving up important social, occupational, or recreational activities because of substance use.
8. Using substances again and again, even when it puts you in danger.
9. Continuing to use, even when you know you have a physical or psychological problem that could have been caused or made worse by the substance.
10.Needing more of the substance to get the effect you want (tolerance).
11. Development of withdrawal symptoms, which can be relieved by taking more of the substance
You only need to have 2 to 3 to have mild substance abuse disorder.

It's not the end of the world. It's not even a big deal even. Plenty of people live happy and productive lives while being sick.

i wasn't hospitalised, i don't know if i just fabricated that at the time or what. understandably everything seemed very bad back then because i was breaking up with my first 'serious' girlfriend and we had made the insane decision to live together at 19. i've never been in hospital for anything in my life.

i was arrested and released without charge 12 hours later. it was an ordeal, for sure. but nothing more dramatic to me than a drunk spending a night in the cells for affray or public disorder. i made a scene in an emotionally charged situation when i was 19. am i meant to be embarrassed about it when i'm 30? because, y'honour, i am not.

and people don't get criminal records when they are caught for the first time with a tiny quality of a controlled substance. but nice one. court adjourned?

I don't mind talking about my problems with drugs. I just admitted it earlier. My issue with drugs stem from boredom. You of all people should know how marijuana makes almost all activities better.

And for what it's worth, I rarely hold it over your or Uzique's head when you insult me.

The last time I was hospitalized for depression I was 21. You insult me about my mental health all of the time. Dilbert is only giving you back what you give to me without me complaining.

i tell everyone about my arrest anecdote. my girlfriends since have found it completely unbelievable.

everyone collectively lost their minds in that period of free and plentiful drugs. it was a very strange time. nobody took those drugs after they got banned. it was an indian summer. sometimes we are nostalgic about it.

drug anecdotes are in the top-rank of all anecdotes.

dilbert probably does think i was hospitalised. i'm just correcting him. i got arrested at my house and taken to the local cells. they wouldn't let me go until a psychiatrist had signed me off, because that's standard protocol for anyone who is taken into custody when drunk or on drugs. we had a 5 minute conversation with me being 'baseline' sober the next morning, when she came on call and became available, and i walked out and got on a bus. no hospitals.

i'm sorry you were admitted to hospital for psychiatric problems but it's disingenuous to make out drugs have 'played havoc' with my life. i finished my education and i've always had good jobs since. I've taken pretty much what i want, when i want to. haven't had to give any hand jobs to any punks under the queensboro bridge just yet.

'Fabricated' So you didn't take too many drugs and have a complete public meltdown and have to be taken to casualty? What was it, serotonin collapse or something?

Weren't you released on bail then the charges dropped after the powder was tested and found to not yet be on the prescribed list by a day or two?

If you're going to make things up to get attention thats an issue by itself.

Well going by the DSM 5 and your own admitting to doing hard drugs still and even harder ones in the past you do fit the definition of mild substance abuse disorder. You agree to that? Ken and I are open to admitting it.
