Iraqi defector 'Curveball' admits WMD lies
An Iraqi defector code-named "Curveball", whose statements convinced the CIA and the Bush administration that Iraq had secret biological weapons, has admitted for the first time that he lied.

Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, who fled Iraq in 1995, confessed that he made up the stories of mobile bio-weapons trucks and clandestine factories in Iraq in an attempt to bring down Saddam Hussein's regime.

The defector told The Guardian that he watched in horror as his claims were lapped up by the Bush administration and used to justify the invasion of the country in 2003.

"Maybe I was right, maybe I was not right," Mr al-Janabi said. "They gave me this chance. I had the chance to fabricate something to topple the regime. I and my sons are proud of that and we are proud that we were the reason to give Iraq the margin of democracy."

He claimed that American officials suggested that his co-operation would make it easier for his Moroccan-born wife and child to join him in Germany.

Mr al-Janabi initially spoke to the German secret service, the BND, but the information was passed to the CIA and was eventually included in a notorious 2003 speech at the United Nations by Colin Powell, then US Secretary of State. He said that when he complained to his German handlers that they had violated an agreement not to pass his information to a third country, he was silenced and placed in lockdown for around 90 days.

Mr al-Janabi, who had previously maintained his claims were true, made his admissions in a series of interviews in Germany, where he has been granted asylum. He said he had told a German official, who he identified as Dr Paul, about mobile bio-weapons trucks in 2000.

The BND identified him as a Baghdad-trained chemical engineer and approached him in March that year looking for information about Saddam's regime.

"I had a problem with the Saddam regime," he said. "I wanted to get rid of him and now I had this chance."

Mr al-Janabi portrayed the BND as gullible and so eager to elicit details from him that they gave him a Perry's Chemical Engineering Handbook to help communicate.

"They were asking me about pumps for filtration, how to make detergent after the reaction," he said. "Any engineer who studied in this field can explain or answer any question they asked."

Colin Powell demands answers over 'Curveball'
Former American secretary of state Colin Powell has reportedly called on the CIA and Pentagon to explain how he was given unreliable information which proved key to the US case for invading Iraq.

Powell's landmark speech to the United Nations on February 5, 2003, cited intelligence about Iraq leader Saddam Hussein's bioweapons programme gained from a defector, code-named Curveball. But he has now admitted that he lied to topple the dictator, in an interview with the Guardian.

"It has been known for several years that the source called Curveball was totally unreliable," Mr Powell said.
"The question should be put to the CIA and the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) as to why this wasn't known before the false information was put into the (report) sent to Congress, the president's state of the union address and my 5 February presentation to the UN."

The defector, real name Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, admitted for the first time this week that he lied to the BND, Germany's secret service, by claiming in 2000 that Iraq had mobile bioweapons trucks and had built clandestine factories.

During Mr Powell's speech, Mr Janabi was described as "an Iraqi chemical engineer" who "supervised one of these facilities."
"He actually was present during biological agent production runs and was also at the site when an accident occurred in 1998," Mr Powell told the UN.

Mr Janabi was exposed as an unreliable source when the BND visited Bassil Latif, his former boss at the Military Industries Commission in Iraq, who said there were no trucks or factories. However, the BND continued to co-operate with the trained chemical engineer, and the false statements were eventually passed on to senior US policy-makers by the intelligence services.

The resulting conflict claimed more than 100,000 civilian lives.

Hans-Christian Stroebele, a Green deputy in Germany's federal parliament, said Mr Janabi had arguably broken the German law which forbids warmongering.

We've known this for some time, should the CIA now explain their failure as Colin Powell demands?

Or is he just trying to rewrite history so he can be America's first black Republican President?

Curveball is really not the reason Iraq went wrong, they don't declare war based on one source. Richard Clarke has been telling everyone about the failure for years now - he did include, that the upper echelons of the CIA and people doing the presentation in the UN weren't interested in wether Curveball was wrong or not 'the war is going to happen regardless'.

They really didn't put much value in his WMD story.

Really? It was raised specifically at the UN and in a speech by Bush was it not?

Yeah, but they already knew Curveball was Curveball prior to the presentations given to justify the war.

If anyone should apologize for failure it's first and foremost Cheney, because that bastard insisted on the CIA finding a link between Saddam, WMD's and Al-Qaeda consistently, and Bush. And ofcourse, the CIA itself.

Don't be so naive to think that the secretary of state and the people who sat on the intelligence commitee (some of which are in that video) aren't perfectly aware of what the cia is or isnt doing.

I was going to make an argument in here but why bother?

This horseshit of a story implies that Powell didn't know that his famous UN speech in '03 was a load of horseshit. It's all that Iraqi's fault and that damn CIA... The elected officials are not to blame, no no! Elect is again next time!

If Curveball trolled the US, he also trolled Iraq. That country got fucked up like shit. I reckon if they had their own revolution now like what alot of other Arab nations are having, even if Saddam went crazy like he did last time it would have been much less damaging than the war was.

Going back on the Mubarak thing, in the Israeli thread you claimed the US does nothing but support puppet democracies and install dictators, and here you are 'appalled' at the invasion of Iraq - removing a dictator.

That strikes me as funny.

Sorry, I'm not a visionairy. But considering the current state of Iraq it's unlikely to suddenly turn into an anti-US government as they're highly dependant on the US.

Does that make it a puppet government? No.

btw the brits have had their say in policy making for Iraq aswell, as they assisted the invasion.

Its the inconsistency and hypocrisy, supporting some despots, invading and killing despots who are of no further use.
Ranting about Iran, supporting Saudi Arabia, sanctioning South Africa, sending money and weapons to Israel - and so on.
