It has similarities, yes. I was talking about the reimagined Battlestar.

leeeeeeeet's change the subject.

I'm curious as to JG's stance on Fusion - certainly fusion on any practical level is decades away but in the timescale we're talking about, certainly not a pipe dream.

ITER is supposed to return a positive net energy output.

There's a D&ST - Science thread for this shit.

And you're the one who made it!

Well, fusion has only really been in genuine development in a practical sense for a few years, so it's a decent effort to reach parity already. Especially given we're miiiiles off a "full" understanding of plasma dynamics.

The real problem with fusion is... well it's fucking scary. People have a problem with the scariness of fission and it's not even remotely as dangerous as an out of control mini-star would be.

Involved exactly what you describe, an out of control mini-star from fusion. One of the most hilariously shit pieces of movie physics you will ever see.

People get scared and think the world is going to end every time the LHC is fired up. You think they would be cool with having a mini-star pop up in their town?

The primary problem with fusion is that the gravitational fields required to generate it are obscene. I will be really surprised if anyone manages to break even with it in my lifetime.

Why would you be using gravity?

I think it was 600ish, but I'm not too familiar with that bloke.

Methusela lived 969 years or something like that. Of course earth was very different back then.

I'm not holding my breath on this. If we can live 1000 years, whoop dee doo. I'm more interested in curing cancer, AIDs, etc. than this.
See Kmar, it's nothing that special to reach 1000 years.
The comments link in the op..

Interesting article, isn't 1000 yrs around the average age of the cast in the Old Testament? There is another path to immortality that was not mentioned here. The transfer of our mental patterns into cybernetic bodies. I know it is sci-fi now but you look around the web (real computer and bio-tech science not the cr4p sites) and you can almost see that over the horizens as well as the genetic route. i think we will see both, but IMO the artificail bodies route would be better to get us off this rock.
So yea, nothing special in your quip.

Dude, wtf? Anti-aging research has a huge impact on other areas of medical research.
They sure do.. and they all have them same goal of prolonging life.

This planet can easily sustain massive human populations, we're just rather ineffecient and wasteful right now. It's not even about downgrading the quality of life either. There doesn't need to be "culls" or wars over the last drops of resources if scientific breakthroughs are achieved to change the current system.
This is true. (Food) Energy and water are still largely untapped on this planet. If we learned to manage our resources better, and how to better utilize all of this planets real estate we would be plenty comfortable. We are held back by the groups interested in keeping such commodities at an inflated price.

People are uninformed. Those types of particle collisions happen all the time in our atmosphere.

Plus it is physically impossible to "contain" something in a gravitational field. In fact any force you can dream of that follows a similar sort of scale/pattern/whatever can't do it.
