Tell me again why we're not doing much about a problem much closer to home than the Middle East?

http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/15/2- … in-mexico/

One of two American immigration and customs officers who were shot in Mexico on Tuesday has died, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security said.

The two U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement special agents were shot while driving between Monterrey and Mexico City on Tuesday afternoon by unidentified gunmen, U.S. officials said

...

An ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said these were the first shootings of ICE agents in Mexico.

...

"Let me be clear: Any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any DHS personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," Napolitano said. "The full resources of our department are at the disposal of our Mexican partners in this investigation. We remain committed in our broader support for Mexico's efforts to combat violence within its borders.

The numbers ain't the problem here. If we let this slide, then it only gets worse. Worst case scenario is DEA/ICE/etc. agents start getting knocked off. Actually, worst case scenario is DEA/ICE/etc. agents start getting knocked off in the US. Napoleon is doing the right thing giving more support. The worst possible response would be some Clear and Present Danger shit (yeah, I just brought Clancy into the thread).

what can you do about a narco-state? it would cost more to fix mexico than it would cost to rebuild iraq.

moreso, the whole reason mexico is a narco-state is because the rest of north america generates a demand for their produce.

to fix mexico you've got to fix the politicians in D.C. wanting their daily eight-ball of coke

the most logical solution is legalisation and proper distribution/regulation, yes.

how else are you going to dissolve the drug cartels and the corrupt politicians? you're not. it's simple.

I agree Uzique. Certain drugs like marijuana certainly ought to be legalized. I suppose legalizing and heavily regulating hard drugs would be necessary too. I mean, fighting it with firepower and military operations obviously hasn't been very effective in making the world a better place.

do you think we should legalize harder drugs, such as cocaine, heroin, acid, etc?

If so, how do you suppose we go around regulating it.

I'm all for legalising softer drugs with very strict control and increasing penalties for harder drugs.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

Perhaps something akin to some drinking laws. An example being drink free zones. I'm for legalization but appreciate a lot of people don't want to be around recreational drug users, something geographic in nature anyway.

I'd legalise Cannabis but it's not really something you can control, it's just too easy to home grow. I'd add Ketamine and anabolic Steroids as well as Cocaine.

since when did heroin and acid come from south america?

medically regulating any and all drugs is a damn sight more economically and medically wise than letting some gangsters with guns and all sorts of cutting-chemicals regulate the supply, no?

you sound like an absolute skeptic but i get the impression you don't really know anything about the 'war on drugs'.

I've heard that about weed a lot but I don't think it'll happen. It's not hard to grow basil or other herbs and some vegetables either, but most people prefer the convenience of going to their local Super Walmart and buying a ton of it for comparably the same price. It's also cheaper and not too hard to roll your own cigarettes, but people prefer just going to 7-Eleven and buying a pack of Marlboros.

It's not really the same. Google underground crops in Amsterdam or Illegal Cannabis factory busts in Amsterdam or something.

All fall under -ines. though ketamine is a dirty nasty drug and there's no way i'm putting it inside me
Just turns people into dribbling zombies for a few hours, I'd still legalise it though.

I reckon if the softer drugs are legalised and controlled harder drug use will fall as people can have pretty much the same level of intoxication legally and fairly cheap compared to the harder stuff.
There's also no such things as "gateway drugs".
