Why didn't we celebrate the fall of Saddam? I assume because it was not a civilian revolt. As if that would have been possible when he gassed his own people.

.. and in reality our constitution does not allow us to fight in another country to "spread democracy", or the rights of women.. etc.. Iraq had to be portrayed as a legitimate threat to the United States. Disagree with whether or not it was a threat. But the fact is war is only supposed to be waged against a clear and present threat in the US. The Carter doctrine redefined what a threat was... for the worse.

Wars conducted by the likes of the US and its allies for democracy in places like Afghanistan are commendable in some ways. I won't get into the specifics of whether it is ethical because the subject is a clear grey area in an increasingly globalised world but such wars will never be truly successful.
As it says on my wallet, change comes from within. A war like the one in Afghanistan is never going to install a solid democracy, it takes the people to want it and to fight for it. Whether the protests in places like Yemen and Iran are successful or not it's certainly a very interesting time in the Middle East.
