we put the puppets in there, drew the borders, and funded them. its all our fault. thats what we do in this would. blame others for our own mistakes.
Well, the US imposed the Shah in the first place, and Bush destroyed the relatively friendly relations after 9/11 with his 'axis of evil' speech.
Not sure which was dumber, Bush and his 'axis of evil' or Reagan and his 'evil empire'.

There are quite a lot of factors to be blamed about the ME and Africa ... European colonialism and meddling by the US the last decades are partially to blame but it's quite shallow and ignorant to blame all problems in those regions with that alone ...

None of these will be as "easy" as Egypt or Tunesia ... guesstimate is Iran and Saudi will get very nasty if not put down hard very early ...

not to mention that they're really good at cracking down on protestors. Like effectively shutting them down by isolation and other tacticsFEOS wrote:

Sorry. You missed my point. I was saying they are so good at those things because they know that popular uprisings would be the downfall of their regime, since that is how they took power from the Shah. So they focus security internally first, then look external. Most, if not all, autocracies have those priorities.Trotskygrad wrote:

well yes, I figured that was a given so I gave a practical example that showed that they were good at those things... :3FEOS wrote:

McCain Calls Middle East Pro-Democracy Movement a ‘Virus’
I've heard revolts like this described as a virus simply to illustrate how quickly they spread. However, McCain seems genuinely disturbed by the thought of a Democratic ME.

TBH in a strategic/diplomatic sense the removal of those puppet governments with more representative ones probably won't help the US, because you guys aren't very popular over there...

There is a lot of places where we aren't popular.. some of those have free elections all the time. That hasn't stopped other governments from being our strategic friend.Spark wrote:

Eventually freedom, education, and equal rights will bring us closer imo.

Makes you wonder what the world would have been like if Russia, Europe and the US minded their own business after WW2 and just engaged in "normal" diplomatic relations ...
