...a bill. And then we'll hit the debt ceiling unless we also pass another bill:

On March 4th the federal government will run out of money unless Congress first passes a bill voting more; a few weeks after that, it will bump up against the federal debt ceiling, now set at an apparently insufficient $14.3 trillion, unless, again, Congress votes to increase it. Both measures must be passed by a House of Representatives now firmly in Republican hands, and also require the support of seven or more Republican senators. The Republicans have vowed to exact deep spending cuts in return for their assent. The president will not accept these. The stage is set for a savage spring.

Anyone think we'll actually get something passed before then, or will it be a repeat of the Federal government shutdown in the 90s?

We really have no choice. Government spending must be cut to mirror the budget constraints of the American people. Problem is, I don't trust the Republicans to be any more frugal than the Democrats.

Funny thing is that the spending cuts the Republicans want are the the exact things Obama set as campaign promises.

eg: Health Care.

It'll have to be raised though.

$14.3 trillion wasn't enough.. that's scary.

Our spending is so ridiculous. If I tried using my money the way our government does, I'd be on my ass in the streets faster than you can say bankruptcy.

The government has a much better credit score than you. Why the debt isn't an immediate problem.

But it's a job killing spend spree! lol It's headed to the supreme court anyway - so it's going to be interesting what happens when it gets there.

And if they tun up their debt too high their credit rating goes down. So it is a problem.

It raises taxes on investments which would hurt job growth a bit.

That's the US GDP for one year. US isn't that bad in debt as most people think, at least a lot better than Europe.

Everybody wants to cut the spending so long as it's not cutting in the areas and interest they represent. I saw a chart once that had all of the "fiscal Conservatives", and the amount of money they took in locally for their states/districts with the first stimulus. Ridiculous.

On a serious note, I might sit back and try to learn something on this one.

^ its more important to look at who was in congress during those times. Congress after all writes the check. Its also important to note that the us economy is so large that by the time policy takes effect another president is in office. Our economy is slow to respond to changes in policy. That image is a rather simplistic way to judge history.

It's all an elaborate numbers game. Clinton didn't actually run a surplus. .. and to be fair Obama included the iraq war into the budget .. wheras Bush kept it on a seperate set of books.

Government sponsored ponzi schemes.
