Quick summary:

L.A. Noire is an upcoming video game developed by Team Bondi and published by Rockstar Games. Initially announced as only for the PlayStation 3, the game was later reported to also be scheduled for release on the Xbox 360. L.A. Noire is set in "a perfectly re-created Los Angeles" of 1947, with players being given an open-ended challenge to solve a series of murder mysteries.

As the title suggests, the game draws heavily from both plot and aesthetic elements of film noir - stylistic films from the 1940s and 1950s that shared similar visual styles and themes including crime, sex and moral ambiguity and were often shot in black and white with harsh, low-key lighting. The game uses a distinctive coloring-style in homage to the visual style of film noir. The post-war setting is the backdrop for plot elements that reference the detective films of the '40s, such as corruption and drugs, with a classical jazz soundtrack.

L.A. Noire is also notable for using Lightsprint's real-time global illumination technology, as well as a newly developed piece of technology called MotionScan, where actors are recorded by 32 surrounding cameras to capture facial expressions from every angle.
Amid the post-war boom of Hollywood's Golden Age, Cole Phelps (Aaron Staton - Ken Cosgrove from Mad Men) is an LAPD detective thrown headfirst into a city drowning in its own success. Corruption is rampant, the drug trade is exploding, and murder rates are at an all-time high. In his fight to climb the ranks and do what’s right, Phelps must unravel the truth behind a string of arson attacks, racketeering conspiracies and brutal murders, battling the L.A. underworld and even members of his own department to uncover a secret that could shake the city to its rotten core.

Using groundbreaking new animation technology that captures every nuance of an actor's facial performance in astonishing detail, L.A. Noire is a violent crime thriller that blends breathtaking action with true detective work to deliver an unprecedented interactive experience. Search for clues, chase down suspects and interrogate witnesses as you struggle to find the truth in a city where everyone has something to hide.

technology looks pretty promising

lets hope they integrate it into a gta-style sandbox world of immersion rather than a mafia-style linear borefest

Looking forwards to this, (flatmate has a PS3 so I can actually look forward to this.) It's more than runny-gunny-covery-shooty action and more games need to be that way I think, endless violence is getting tiresome.

That being said it runs the risk of being a series of cutscenes separated by walking sections. Hope it's not. It needs to get the balance right.

I like how the hook for this game is the quality of its actors. Gives me a lot of faith in it

The main premise behind it is in the interrogations and interviews. You need to look at people's facial reactions and body language in order to tell if they're lying. Pretty cool concept, tbh. That's why they have such heavy facial animation technology. I really hope there's several court scenes which will allow you to do that as well. It's like Phoenix Wright made by Rockstar.

I have a game for like every month from now until June. Dead Space 2 - Bulletstorm - Crysis 2 - Portal 2 - L.A. Noire/Duke Nukem Forever.

Then Rage in September

Not mad, it's just annoying how you always have to comment on everything with your stupid remarks. Just like zeek said, the driving point of this game is it's 1940's setting. If you don't like it - great! Not every game is for every person. Doesn't mean I go into the LoL or HoN thread saying "TOTALLY NOT DIGGING THIS SETTING, YO".

poseidon is pretty much on point here. nail + head.

floppy the fact is that you feel as though you have the right to comment on absolutely EVERYTHING- even when your opinion is completely uninformed, inexperienced and contributes NOTHING. as pos said... we don't go into the league of legends thread and go "not really digging this game genre tbh"- what does it add to the discussion? oh, great. okay. some person that thinks his opinion is important enough to be shared wants us to know he doesn't like the game, categorically.

if everybody in the world felt that their opinion and taste on EVERYTHING was so valuable, nobody would ever shut the fuck up.

I have a hunch that this game could be more cut-scene watching, walking and talking than driving and shooting as we're used to from the GTA series.

The walking and talking looks incredibly though.
I wonder how deep the facial system thingie really interferes with the story, because every game in the past that claimed to leave the choice to the user, to be non-linear and to let the user have impact on the development of the storyline actually fell short by far. It was always a few pre-defined paths that you were more or less subtly pushed.
