So I was going to look at getting a new phone. Seeing as I'm with O2 already, I thought I'd try there first. I went to their online shop:

I keep finding myself in situations where I'd really like to have mobile internet. So I figured that seeing as my contract expires at the end of the month, I'd get myself some kind of smartphone.

I'd probably get that if I were to get an iPhone. So that's a 32GB phone with 300mins, unlimited texts and 500MB data. That's more than twice the cost of my current tariff, though, where I get 300mins and unlimited texts (with no data).
Actually I guess getting 32GB is overkill, I can easily deal with 16GB.

I've got a 16GB. The plan I'm on is a lot better though, at least dollar value. $550 worth of calls/sms a month plus 2GB of data for $60 AUD a month (Optus)
When you access a wifi network you don't use your plan's data either (obviously). But if I went with Telstra (best coverage telco in Aus, also the most expensive) I'd get a 1GB/$750 call/sms plan for $80 p/m. So yeah, depends what you want I guess.
I've also never used up all the phone's physical data, but it wouldn't be all that hard to if I wanted to I guess. Have a lot of music on there and like to record video sometimes (usually when I go to a concert). I'll then clear the video off once I transfer it to my PC so I've got as much available space as I can spare.
Also, on the video capture topic, it pretty much NEVER distorts the audio. Period. Don't believe me? This was taken by me, front row of a Tool concert about 3 weeks ago - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPg1kkAHAEU

I'll have a look at the other smartphones available first.
