The secret to success is following your beliefs and interests, rather than the money.

There are your words of wisdom from a person without it.

Are we talking about successful in the eyes of society or successful to oneself.

If the women don't find ya handsome. They should at least find ya handy.

It depends on your goals. If you want to be an awesome janitor you can be one if you put in the effort. It won't make you rich, but that wasn't the goal in this case.

Right here, success =/= wealth.

Not work hard, work smart. Practice doesn't make perfect, correct practice makes perfect. Luck can somewhat help but I do agree with the OP that it doesn't necessarily help you, you gotta come up with a means to make up for no luck.

It's not being lucky, or being born into the right family (though that helps cover up deficiencies to an extent). It's not being born a genius or a retard. No, the secret to success is... surprise! Hard work. It takes approximately 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert at anything. Bobby Fischer? 10,000 hours playing chess before he became the youngest Grandmaster in history. Bill Gates? 10,000 of programming experience before he even reached Harvard.

Why do I mention this? Because I'm sick and tired of reading on this forum about conspiracy theories regarding the rich or seeing people publish replies based on some ridiculous assumption that they only became wealthy due to luck. Sorry, luck has very little to do with anything.
So in short...over 9000 hours?

I counter with the following:

A kid is born in southeast DC to a single mother who cant hold a job. His neighborhood peers include bangers and druggies. His whole world is basically a shit hole where nobody puts any emphasis on hard work. He goes to schools with crappy teachers and ends up at a high school where the math proficiency rate is 8%.

His chances of becoming a Bill Gates are pretty damn low. But, he could at least become middle class. I think people exaggerate the American dream and think it means anyone can become rich. IMO, its more likely that you'll move up a ring on the economic ladder, and then hopefully your kids go up another, etc.

Fly that Janitor to some 5-star beach resort, owned by Ritz, Waldorf, or some such.  Let him enjoy it for a week, all expenses paid.  When he returns back home, working as a janitor, tell him it was $1K a day.  And tell him you do this every year with your family.

I know a few 'janitors' pulling in 55K a year.

Im an architect & the janitor in my Mums school earns more than me atm, has guaranteed pension at 60 & security.
Plus he is a lazy bastard. Me & my dad have to go down and fix stuff in the classrooms because he wont do it. He is constantly on the sick and off with stress. Yes, its very stressful being a janitor.

He works for the government so he will be ok. My taxes will keep him in a job and good pension.
My income has been cut to a third of what it was 3 years ago. Still paying the same tax & bills and will be dragged to court if I don't.
Its not because I am lazy. Its not because of luck. The construction industry has went down the toilet in this country. And yes someone is to blame. Bankers. Government deregulation & greedy developers. I ain't getting rich and unless I change my career I ain't going to have a chance to be rich no matter how hard I work because the work simply isn't there at this time.

I find, its the people who work for the government directly or indirectly or are in government who love to stick the lazy label on people who are struggling, unemployed or whatever.
In the world of self employment its a fucking jungle out there.

Yeah, but $55K a year still won't let you jetset every year with your entire family.

work for the gov't and do absolutely nothing. cops/parole officers/sanitation workers/firefighters etc. you can make six figures easy without doing anything but sleeping.
Lot of truth in that; add postal workers, remove cops and firefighters
take a radio car and park it under the freeway. if a very important call comes in: take it. other than that ignore the rest. whenever the man upstairs wants his quota go out and do work for a few days. parole/probation officers can choose to just sit at the office/run personal errands and fake logs(i.e. claim they were checking up on client xxx). it's common to see that between cities all over this nation.  as for firefighters, in nyc they do two days(48 hours) and five days off. most of the times the calls are false alarms. only problem is when there really is a fire.  can severely fuck up your health.

I think the stats were saying that in america you have a higher chance of going down a rung on that ladder, but you'll probably stay at the same tier. There's really no room for growth. Hell I'm sure those on Welfare in this country are the least bogged down with debt.  Going to a debt filled struggling middle class from a welfare position probably doesn't make any sense. There's no room for growth with outdated tax laws for a jump up.

why all this talk about the glass ceiling? mass upward mobility would destabilize society. imagine a place so horrible that everyone earned what they had!

The American dream is lots of cheap crap. and that's exactly what capitalism manages to deliver, for the most part. American dream= acquisition
