The Birmingham News wrote:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley told a church crowd just moments into his new administration that those who have not accepted Jesus as their savior are not his brothers and sisters, shocking some critics who questioned Tuesday whether he can be fair to non-Christians.

"Anybody here today who has not accepted Jesus Christ as their savior, I'm telling you, you're not my brother and you're not my sister, and I want to be your brother," Bentley said Monday, his inauguration day, according to The Birmingham News.

Well, our officials can be personally religious without violating that, but yes, it looks like he isn't very intent on staying faithful to that tenet (no pun intended).

Unfortunately, America has its share of Christian equivalents to Islamists.

Islamism is a political movement in Islam that involves greater involvement of religion in policy.  While the term "Islamism" is often associated with extremists and terrorism, the majority of Islamists are political activists -- not terrorists.

In other words, I'm not suggesting that we have a lot of Christian terrorists -- we have a lot of people that run for office who openly press for more involvement of Christianity in policy decisions.

The premises behind the Religious Right and Islamism are the same -- with the only difference being the choice of religion involved.

Turquoise is entirely right, Brinson. Islamism has nothing to do with terrorism, Islamic terrorism is simply an extension of Islamism.

There have been a few Christian terrorists already in the US, though, that have in fact blown up buildings...

Part of me goes.........bad!

But, another part says fuck it. Atleast in the USA you have politicians who are individuals.  Bad or good, at least they are capable of free thought and not afraid to let people know their personal views.

UK politicians all sound the same. All PR savvy, fake smile, Politically Correct drones. Scared of the media, run by the media, personal opinions changing with public opinion.  Id rather have my politicians out and open about their views than constantly gerrymandering around popular opinion which is heavily influenced by the shit various media barons output.
In the USA they still call a spade a spade.

Yes, I suppose we definitely have certain politicians that are very open about where they stand, even if where that is happens to be extreme.

Sure. But this guy expressed his "free thought" moments after taking office. There's a big difference there.

If anything I'd argue that christian religious influences have some what declined over the last 4 decades.

Well, it is true that atheists and agnostics are one of the fastest growing demographics in America, but evangelical Christianity still has a lot of power in our politics.  It was probably most powerful in the 90s and the early part of the last decade, but the Tea Party is somewhat religious in its own right.

Also, the lasting influence of The Family in federal politics is proof of the prominence of Islamist-style politics in our system.  Christian Zionists are easily compared with Islamists.

He didn't blow up the federal building in the name of christianity...so I don't think that really applies.
