Strange, I was fighting for my life when I was 20 because I caught some guy raping a chick out in a field on the farm at 2:30am. 

What was I doing that was abnormal?

I realise that my last statement was badly worded.

I know there's the possibility I'll get mugged, i've lived in/near cities all my life and i'm moving to the capitol later this year, i'm comfortable in the belief I will never have to shoot anyone or be shot at.

The "near lynch mob atmosphere" talk is an example of the unnecessary editorializing that goes along with the news, and the inabilty for readers to distinguish the facts from the commentary of a story is part if the problem we have today. The people responsible for death threats are the idiots that make them .. in your 2008 case it would appear that these threats came from white supremacy groups, although specific sources are suspiciously left out. I'm sure the media can spin the existance of these groups into palins fault, so long as there is an eager audience willing to lap it up.

In England, you're probably right.

In America....  not so much.   Certain areas of America are safer than most of England, but other areas are far less safe.

Again, if you live in a place like Baltimore, having a gun is more relevant.  If you live in London...  probably not so much.
