here's a photo of me being rescued from the ski slopes
fractured my L2 vertebra (near the base of your spine)
- went skiing on Dec 22nd
- fell over in some manner on the slopes (December 26th)
- lost consciousness momentarily
- couldn't get up again, was apparently being somewhat less than coherent
- brother phoned mountain rescue
- put on a stretcher and had a neck brace
- taken down to the resort's medical centre in a "blood wagon" - a kind of stretcher that the rescuers ski you down in
- had an x-ray
- put in an ambulance, taken to Grenoble hospital down the mountain
- three nights in hospital, lucky i could speak French as none of the nurses/doctors spoke English
- fitted with a "corset" - a brace to stop me from bending or twisting my spine at all
- discharged from hospital, but not allowed to sit down, can only lie or stand/walk (29th)
- got an ambulance back up to the ski resort to spend the rest of the holiday there, and see in the new year there
- at least i could walk!
- have to do a kind of log role to get in and out of bed
- taken home in an ambulance. 14 hour journey (Jan 2nd)
- still cant do anything apart from lie/walk/stand
- admitted to English hospital on the 6th
- saw a consultant who eventually decided the fracture isn't as bad as first thought
- i'm now allowed to sit down and travel normally in a car
- still have to wear the brace 24 hours a day. hopefully that'll change on Tuesday after another consultation & physiotherapist appointment
and that's it so far
