tl;dr basically car manufacturers are researching ways to have cars be able to detect your BAC without having one of those interlock breathalyzers that the driver has to blow into. They could apparently work a lot like bomb-detection devices. Some people think it's an awesome idea, some people think it's the work of satan himself.

Assuming that it would not let you drive only if you were over the legal limit (in the US it's .08 BAC), would you be opposed to having this in your car? I myself wouldn't mind.

As soon as someone has an accident in one and there BAC is over the 0.8 they are going to sue the manufacturer.

The only way you can get an accurate blood alcohol reading is with a blood sample...

Dont they still bring you to the station to get an accurate blood reading? I couldve sworn they dont use a breathalyzer as concrete proof

You'd mind as soon as you wanted your cheese curds from the all-night place at 4am after your whizbang blowout party and your sober friend's car won't start because your drunk ass is sitting next to him.

All sorts of things wrong with this... What happens if there is an emergency and the only available driver has a BAC of .09? I understand the intent, I just think the consequences would be pretty drastic. Nevermind the fact that there will always be ways to circumvent things like this.

What happens if your drunk friend in the car sets it off? Or an emergency? Or a million other things that could go wrong with it. Stupid idea if you ask me. It won't work.

I was thinking about this too, actually.  If the device is some sort of ambient detector, then anyone in the car that is drunk will probably set it off.

Anything to prevent drunk driving IMO.

This is a good point though, if they manage to iron out faults like this, I really don't see any valid argument against such a system.

Can't you blow over with something like mouthwash?  And considering that's just your breath and not in your blood, its not actually affecting you. Now we're going to have an influx of people with bad breath

Christ Winston. Haven't you ever seen Mythbusters?

This seems a stupid feature if it were to be on every car, though.

Take a drink + mouthwash :p. I know it doesn't do it alone but this thing is obviously going to be hypersensitive if its an ambient sensor

RTA, apparently it would actually use detectors on the wheel.

Really, what if. You're having a few drinks at home. Suddenly some unforseen event happens where you absolutely need to use your car, even if you are over the limit. It's literally life or death whether you can drive away or not. Only to find your car locks you out because you're over the limit.

It's not good to shift the responsibility from the driver/person to the car like this "for the greater good" and all that. Murphy's law will indicate it will probably end up fucking you in the ass.

I wouldn't buy a car that does this, you never know what happens in life.

You could always call 911? Or whatever the emergency number is in England.

I'm pretty sure that if you call the emergency service and explain that your situation requires immediate medical attention but you are locked out of your car because you are basically to drunk that they will help you out..

Then again it does display that such a system is not perfect..

Sure let people have it as an optional extra but don't force people to have them.
