This game got a bad rep at launch but personally I'm enjoying it. But then I've always liked the underdog.

I played battlefield 2 for a quite a while and to be honest I got turned me off the whole glamorisation of war thing, and I decided I'd rather be running round with cat women smacking goblins and dragons about.

I think the main issue that stitched it up in the reviews is that there were expectations of something more accessible and player friendly. But that's not what a FF MMO should be about.. should be about battering the player repeatedly about the face with extreme difficulty and long, hard grinds for levels so that there's some (false) sense of accomplishment when you get there. And that's something you can't capture in a review of a game that's only just come out.

But in compromising where they have, they also turned off the most hardcore, who found they didn't have any achievements to work towards that took 43231 hours to achieve available from launch day.

All in all, if you don't care about being the best of the best and just take a nice slow pace, this game is actually not a bad way to while away your evenings, and with the monthly updates there's plenty to look forward to in the future.

In summary: It's not WoW.

Not really, just alot of people have very negative opinions of the game. They're welcome to them, just saying don't believe the reviews. It's either a game for you or not.

What server are you on? I got 'forced' to restart on a new server to join other friends and since finding that out I've not put much, if any, time into the game.

It was great when I played it - definitely had it's missing parts, but coming from an MMO such as FFXI, you learn that it's how a good MMO should be. Slow, yet rewarding for your time eventually. The game's unfinished, clearly, but it's all working well. The content is just being added to it, as shown in updates and news on future updates. The fact that they themselves see this as sort of fucking over paying customers, therefore not charging monthly fees til all's well is really commendable, IMO.

Also, I hate constant WoW comparisons. They're different kinds of MMO. That game's for simple gamers, in my opinion (see above poster). I'm glad to see the new team line-up and glad they aren't even charging until it's to up to what it should be.

I shall be getting into it again swiftly after the December update. Can't wait

Also, Uzique, it's successful and being dealt with to the people who matter. You're wrong, as are many, many things about your weird little life.

I'm on Mysidia. EU section lead on a large EU/NA shell (~126 members), and when the new Companies feature is introduced we're expecting to start moving towards more organised events. If you change your mind about Wutai, let me know and I can send you the website.

For me, I tend to try and avoid grinding when I play, preferring to do events like Leves and Behest (although 15 person is the current maximum size of a party so not too large scale). Mostly I prefer playing with people rather than against them, and single player games for me are for offline time (nothing like the looks you get on the train from the person next to you as you violently decapitate someone in Fallout).

In fact, straight grinding through levels is punished by this game as you gradually start to earn less skill points, eventually down to zero.

I don't think there are too many examples of poor design, it is more a case of poor implementation and incompleteness of the vision at launch. But those problems are being rapidly fixed and actually would only really bother you if you were a perfectionist fixated on them, rather than actually focusing on and enjoying the parts which are ready now The storylines are fun and rewarding, and the idea of new plot threads unfolding which each class you rank up is quite a good design in my opinion.

Whether or not any game is "good" is based on personal taste anyway, but stupid is not a term you can apply to the majority of the FFXIV community, given the length most players will go to in terms of maximising performance and understanding the mathematics that make up this game (and XI), and the innovative strategies and styles that develop which the designers could never have forseen when they originally put the pieces together.
