Stockholm blasts kill one and injures two

One person has been killed and two others injured as two explosions rocked the centre of the Swedish capital, Stockholm, police say.

A car blew up near the busy shopping street of Drottninggatan, and another explosion hit nearby minutes later.

A man's body was discovered after the second blast.

A police spokeswoman, Petra Sjolander, said the car contained gas canisters and that the cause of the explosions was being investigated.

She said the car caught fire "following a series of explosions which could be those of gas canisters" inside the vehicle.

Ms Sjolander said it was unclear if the two blasts were linked.

"I can't confirm that the death is linked to the car explosion, but I can't rule it out either," AFP news agency quoted her as saying.

The identities of the victims have not been released.

A former employee of the Associated Press news agency, Gabriel Gabiro, was close to the second blast.

"I saw some people crying, perhaps from the shock," he told the agency.

"There was a man lying on the ground with blood coming out in the area of his belly, and with his personal belongings scattered around him."

Some news sources said the guy with the blown out belly was found surrounded by nails and that a news agency received a threat a few hours before the bombs went off. Both might be hyperbolic rumors though a guy with a blown out belly after a failed car bomb goes off kinda scream failed suicide attack.

Any Swedes here close to the bombing?

I don't live in Stockholm but I am Swedish. Well on one of our other sites it says that it was a suicide attack, since he had 6 pipebombs strapped around him but only one went off. Also some people near the area heard him talk in some middle east language but then again I'm sure they would just point towards that area since its been on the news for a long time.

He also had a backpack with screws in and most likely some TNT. Why he would suicide at that area is confusing really.

Luckily a broken wire (what the morning paper said) kept this guy from killing anyone but himself. From what I've seen on a video clip taken after the explosions he exploded on Drottninggatan, a long street with loads of shops (it's pedestrian only), and usually plenty of people (at least at the times I've walked there).

From 1979 onward we have been creating generation upon generation full of hate for the west in the ME region, particularly around Afghanistan and it's borders. The last decade of occupation has made extremism flourish.

Seeing as people are completely unwilling to solve the situation (and the incompetence with which it was handled in the first place) it'll come back to bite our society in the ass ~10-20 years from now, I'd say there's a very good chance of that. Arguably earlier.

I think the reason they are in High Gear is they are losing control of their people because the have less and less control over the information the common people can get at. 30 years ago they could have easily convinced the common muslim that Westerners have horns and all live in sh*t. Not so easy to do anymore, and forget trying to keep porn away from them. They can see lifestyles from all over the world at any time. You will have a tuff time keeping these people in the program the more they know. Just my guess.

Well obviously, all religion is a form of insanity.

In actuality, it possibly touches on wikileaks, but not in that way. The same laws that protect wikileaks in Sweden allowed the Muhammad cartoon to be republished there which was one of the greivances the guy had apparently listed (that and troops in Afghanistan).

If someone lives through the soviet occupation and/or the whole Afghanistan/Iraq ordeal as an insurgent he's bound to be quite skilled/experienced in what he does.

Beyond that, underestimating your opponent or depicting them as incompetent baboons (even if they were) is the biggest mistake you'll ever make in a conflict. It's far safer to overestimate their ability.
