This summer armed government agents raided Rawesome Foods, a Venice, California health food co-op. What were the agents after? Unpasteurized milk, it turns out.

Raw milk raids are happening all over the United States. The Food and Drug Administration warns that raw milk consumption can cause health problems, but a growing community of raw foods enthusiasts are ignoring government recommendations and claiming that they are getting tastier, more nutritious food by going raw.

Reason.tv visited Rawesome to examine the circumstances of the raid and discovered that this particular raw foods case stretches across county lines and involves at least five separate government agencies, despite the fact that not a single member of Rawesome has complained or been harmed by the raw foods. In fact, members have to sign a contract stating that they understand and accept the risks of consuming raw foods before they are allowed to step inside.

If members of a private club sign a waiver stating that they want to drink a certain type of milk, why is the government getting involved? As Jarel Winterhawk, a manager at Rawesome, puts it, "This is America. How are you going to tell me what I can and cannot eat?"

Though no charges have yet resulted from the raid, Rawesome is threated with shutdown due to the involvement of yet another government agency, Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, and the club's raw goat milk supplier, Healthy Family Farms, has had its dairy license suspended.

Awesome quote from the video "This is America, shouldn't we have the right to decide what goes into our own bodies?" I personally think the raw food movement is retarded but having government agencies come with guns drawn just to terrorize them out of business is utterly ridiculous. It's a fad that isn't hurting anyone. Let people do what they want.

What is the point really. Is the point that the government can take things a little too seriously and a little too far? Or is the point that people are sheeple and will do almost anything to fit in to a specific group.

A bit of both.

I'd encourage more raw food consumption, personally.  Natural selection at its finest...

If there is a risk of introducing a new pathogen by drinking unpasteurized milk, why would you? Would you risk everyone around you because you felt so righeous? Drink pasteurized-milk like the rest of us.

The guy @ 00:53 said honey is raw but in reality it is pasteurized as well. you can get it raw (with honey comb) at an organic store or farmer.

Are we in the US the only country that does pasteurize? I remember hearing something that the cheese and milk in Europe is Unpasteurized and way better...

Just saying that's what I heard.

I could be mistaken, but I believe you're referring to homogenization.  We have homogenized milk, whereas non-homogenized milk is more common in much of Europe.

Pasteurization is pretty commonly used in the industrialized world, although some cheeses sold here and abroad are unpasteurized.

I couldn't finish the video. Watching agents running around with guns in a health food store was making me laugh too hard.

If I had the opportunity to try some of these raw foods I would. It's not like I don't put worse things into my body...

There was an interview with a French fromagerie owner a good while back and he was asked why the food inspector didn't stop him selling un-pasteurised cheese - which is against EU law.

The answer - 'ze inspecteur likes ze cheese just like everyone else'

They aren't selling to the general public. Members of the co-op sign a waiver. The stuff they are ingesting isn't mind-altering, so they aren't a threat to society at large after ingesting the stuff.

This makes zero sense.

The point is there are Food and Drug regulations for a reason. Milk is pasteurized for a reason, to kill harmful bacteria. And I'm guessing selling unpasteurized milk is against regulations in the US as it is in just about everywhere else.

Yeah, apparently, there's been quite an effort lately to snow over the dangers of HFCS.  There's a lot of money behind corn in general.

Well, the main concerns involved are the pathogens these people become carriers of by consuming unpasteurized milk.  I think the concerns are a bit overstated and I disagree with the government's response, but I can see where the worries come from.

we are turning ourselves into bubble-people where the slightest infection will overwhelm our bodies' defenses while at the same time creating more lethal versions of common viruses and bacteria. way to go humans!

Funny you mention that. My gf is a germaphobe and constantly sick/allergic. Im a typical guy, I wash my hands when they are visibly dirty. I get sick once a year tops. She is always disinfecting shit and still gets sick. Im with Carlin on this one.

In all seriousness, food sanitation and anti-microbial materials are a good thing.  Now, the overuse of antibiotics is another story.

Ohh ok so I was mistaken, so they could get sick?

I don't know if I really care, but right now the war on drugs seems to be failing so why not start a war on food?

Also I'm sure that the animals need to be kept healthier for the unpasteurized stuff.

Pasteurization doesn't have anything to do with the health of the cow.  I would assume that a lot of unpasteurized milk still comes from cows that we shoot up with antibiotics and hormones.

Now, if someone is purchasing organic milk, the cow is supposed to be healthier and not given growth hormones, but I'm not sure what the status of antibiotic use is in most cases.  I suppose there are some antibiotic-free milk sources out there.

Of course, the primary problem with organic foods is that there is no government certification that something has met the standards that organic sources make claims to.  It's kind of like how bottled water is often little more than tap water from a given city (or excess water from a soda plant, like in the case of Dasani).

I only saw one cop with a gun drawn.

I assume it was video tape from the stores video camera and not some stock footage added for effect ala M. Moore.
I couldn't see what he was pointing it at and why he felt the need to, so I can't second guess him.

They should have

1. Without prior warning - Thrown Grenades in the Children's bed room windows at dawn.
2. Shot the dogs and puppies that were penned up in kennels.
3. Rammed and collapsed the stairs and doorways with an Armored Fighting Vehicle to prevent escape.
4. Pumped High concentrations of extremely flammable teargas in watch it burn to the ground with the children they were "rescuing" still inside.
5. Then, like in any real crime scene investigation, Bring in a bulldozer and clear the site.
