here's my dad's line of thought: because i play an online war game, where i shoot and/or knife other soldiers in game, so i will do in real life: shoot real people and knife real people. in other words, my father states there is no difference between reality and *in game* fantasy.

ok, we know the above is preposterous, but you can see what he's driving at. worse still, my video card burned out and my dad says he will not buy me a new video card because of *his* logic in the first paragraph.

how would you counter argue against my dad's line of thought in the first paragraph? that is, what sort of verbal defense would you use against him. forget that i need a new video card, what sort of defense would you suggest against his argument.

Using your father's line of reasoning, we can argue the following:
- Anyone who plays monopoly (the board game) will financially shaft everybody whom they can later in life
- If you play chess, you're going to try and kill people who are not of your race (black vs white)
- If you play Risk, you've going to try raise an army and take over the world by force
etc

If reasoning with him fails, get a job and save up for a new video card yourself, even if its just stacking shelves for a few hours a week - this will demonstrate a work ethic and maturity, and your Dad will be more likely to consider your requests in the future because of it.

Comparing is 1 thing. Another is, you could try to getting your dad to get in a gaming place and make your dad plays a "Violent" video game and see for himself how it is. Just tell him to try before you judge, I know this will most likely fail especially if he is stubborn but you could try offering him to try just once. Another suggestion is let him watch Penn & Teller Bullshit(the episode of course about violent video games) and make him see the ending of it as well. Problem is they have nude girls in that so maybe not let him watch the episode if he has something against that, I can't remember if the episode did have nude girls or not unfortunately.

Once you're good at it, you can go into the game developing business and create polygon models and maps for shooter games, while secretly adding subconscious, peace-loving, anti-violence messages.
