I see a lot of this stuff on Instagram and it is frankly crude and ugly. It is a weird thing for so many people to happily comment with their full names on such ugliness.

yeah, agreed. though i wouldn't exactly say we all acquitted ourselves well during the peak bf2s era (ahem), it was mostly so innocuous and low-stakes. and almost totally apolitical, so long as you bracket off the bush years thing and all the army vets who used to post in D&ST. nerds playing games and trollng one another is a 'good' way to misspend your youth. the youth nowadays are being radicalised by some really ugly, toxic shit.

We all put some terrible stuff onto the forum. I never really quit doing it. The thing that shocks me is that people are willing to put their name and face on the internet next to it. It shows they either don't understand what they are saying would be hurtful or they are so black pill that they don't care what happens to them in the future.
i don't really consider the back-and-forth stuff on here to be much worse than what goes on today in whatsapp group chats or whatever. in these tiny locked ecosystems, friends/familiars are saying all sorts of outré and egregious shit, shared within their own circles of in-jokes, references, argot, etc. the difference is that peak web2.0 forums are mostly out there, somewhere, frozen in amber forever. i would cringe to let my parents or my other half even see half the group chats i'm a part of. not because they're morally suspect or criminal or anything, but just because, well, 'boys will be boys' and so on. people say shit all the time they'd never want to be put on the public record or raised before a panel of judges in a soviet inquiry.

that's very much happening now, i think. it's already been proven about half a dozen times that 'encrypted' whatsapp chats are a joke. ISPs, phone carriers, social media platforms, etc., will surrender all of your 'private' data to any inquiring body who so much as whisper the word subpoena.
You can assume that 'the authorities' have all your private communications.
What people put in the public domain now will be enough to hang them in 20 years.
Since 9/11 I think we can assume that all public and private data has been recorded and is accessible.
Plus a lot of live stuff is accessible. Its assumed, and they've boasted, that Mossad can access any webcam on earth, its how they wiped out the govt in Tehran.
