By the way she's gorgeous so I'm not saying fat can't be beautiful or anything like that.
Christina Hendricks would be considered fat?  Wow...  no wonder anorexia is a problem in Europe.  We have that problem here too, but it's typically worse over there.

See, over here, Keira Knightley is considered really skinny.  She has a pretty face, but a lot of guys prefer a girl with more curves than that (myself included).

I'd take Hendricks over Knightley any day of the week.
Again, I'm not questioning tastes here. It's so funny how when we discuss weight issues, guys definition of who is fat is "I'd tap that or not"

I think in Europe anorexia is not that much higher than there, what happens is in the US there are so many big people that is impossible to have the same standards as us.

Well, that and we prefer bigger.  If I'm not mistaken, the U.K. is similar in that respect.  Their women are generally bigger than women in continental Europe, and they prefer bigger women.

Again, I guess it comes down to perceptions.

I do like tall women.     Granted, I actually don't know what Hendricks's height is.

But seriously, I know you said that you're not talking about tastes, but since fat is a relative term, tastes actually play a part.  Part of what someone perceives as fat involves tastes, because fat is typically a label with negative connotations.

What one person considers fat will partially relate to a lack of attraction to that person.  Attractions are obviously related to norms, and so I guess since women tend to be thinner in a place like Portugal, the definition of fat is stricter there than here.

Also, things like the BMI system are flawed due to not taking into account differences in bone structures.  That particular system seems to assume that everyone has a small bone structure.  It works for people like me, since I actually have one.  It doesn't work for people like my brother, who's built like Brett Favre.

So again, fat is relative.  Granted, obesity is usually much easier to identify since it is the extreme.

You're right, the BMI charts are total crap.  I think they get used because they are so simple--just get the height and weight, and you get an answer.  And to muddy the waters, on top of the obvious error you pointed out, there hasn't been a whole lot of agreement on where the 'Overweight' and 'Obese' categories should be put on those charts.

Maybe but it works both ways. Underweight definition usually follows the BMI and no one has a chip about it.

Fair point.  Granted, you'd have to be really skinny to be considered underweight with that system.

People are less likely to be underweight in the developed world where those charts will be more prominent.

Probably because it's a minority that falls into that category.  Also, thin is more accepted in society.

I would look like a concentration camp victim if I ever ended up in my 'correct' BMI range. 207? Please, I haven't seen that since I was 16.

Due to my narrow frame, the BMI puts me at the lower end of a healthy weight, but yeah, if my brother adhered to that scale, he would die of starvation.

To put things in perspective, I'm 185 and 6'3", and my stocky brother is 6'0" but 230.  He does a lot of weightlifting.

I was really really skinny. I dropped 37 lbs in basic and went from 242 down to 205. I then proceeded to gain 15 lbs back the next month

Why would you give a shit what uzique says? All he ever does is put people down and make up stories about himself. His opinion is of no consequence.

I know Asian cultures tend to have stricter definitions of fat, but seriously dude, you're skinny.   You'd definitely be considered thin here.

My best friend is Korean, and he always talks about how his Korean friends give him shit about being chubby, but when I compare him to most of my friends, he's still thinner than most people I know.  lol
