Does anyone really think that Afghanistan is going to "kill" the US? Seriously?

That's utter ludicrosity.

The Afghan and Iraq clusterfucks have somewhat dented any credibility wrt dealing with Iran.

Could the US now realistically do anything about Iran with so many ground troops deployed and vulnerable in the area?

Attacking one muslim nation, two, three, four if you count the inevitable invasion of Pakistan which would surely follow, the muslims really will see it as a crusade.

Bin Laden has achieved his objective, of suckering in the US and neutralising it.

Interesting rant, but that wasn't the question, Dilbert.

While you clearly disagree with anything and everything the US does or ever did with regard to foreign policy...the question still remains: Do you seriously think that Afghanistan will "kill" the US? That the US will cease to exist in its present form because of the war in Afghanistan?

The answer, of course, is no.

As to the credibility issue. Yes, Iraq damaged the US's credibility, but that is being rebuilt. And the US can do what it needs to in Iran WRT strategic objectives involving Iran's nuclear program right now--no need for an invasion. And there never has been. That's just been your personal wet dream, tbh.

No impending invasion of Pakistan, either. That will be handled with FID (foreign internal defense) and SOF, aiding the Pakistanis in handling their own problems once they recover from the flooding, as that diverted most of their troops from taking out insurgents. Flood relief efforts only tightened ties between the Coalition and Pakistan, tbh.

Sorry that reality and facts don't fit your tinfoil hat worldview, Dil.

No, but the US will lose its power eventually, just like every empire and superpower before it. Whether or not Afghanistan proves to be a contributing factor, only time will tell.

But mainly I was just quoting a popular saying

The ME adventure has certainly drastically weakened the US, strengthened Iran and China and required a much higher burden of proof for any future UNSC action.

Of course the US will decrease in power. That's inevitable. I doubt, however, Afghanistan will have much to do with it. More like fucked up economic policies that incur massive debt far in excess of what the war in Afghanistan incurs. That, combined with relative gains by rising powers like China and India and a resurging Europe (primarily Germany) and Russia, and there is no option but for the US's "sole superpower" status to change in the coming years.

If Bush hadn't been totally fixated on two wars would he have paid better attention to the economy and the banking system?
Probably not, but you never know.

Probably not, but you never know.
So he should've ignored 9/11 then? Great idea.

Let's pretend that little event never even occurred, shall we (we are in Dilbert's fantasyland, after all)? The economic bust would've happened, regardless. It was driven by the housing bubble, which in turn was driven by legislation that passed in the 90s (the CRA). Bush attempted to reform Fannie and Freddie but was stopped by Congress. So his administration saw problems coming (probably not to the extent they materialized), but was not allowed to even try to implement any reforms to head anything off.

So it's not like he was asleep at the wheel, even while "fixated on two wars". We have separation of powers in this country.

And there was a similar situation WRT Social Security, as well. The Bush administration wanted to implement reforms there to ensure solvency in the program, but Congress blocked it.

Starting to veer a bit off topic...

Stop with the historical factiness. Doesn't support tinfoilhatiness, so must be ignored.

Considering the majority of them voted for it?

Yeah...you probably could argue it. Easily.
