Thinking of buying a Sand rail buggy that I've seen for sale. Planning to go 50/50 with a friend and we basically just want it for a bit of fun to run on the roads and maybe take off roading. One a bit like this:

But I have no idea on the laws of road legality in the US, what makes a good sand buggy (bearing in mind this one is only for sale for $1500) and what I should look out for. He says he needs to sell it because his wife lost her job.

Any comments?

Offer him 1k cash.  Check local laws for street legality requirements.  You may need to trailer that to a park...
I stood in line for four hours. They better give me a Wal-Mart gift card, or something.  - Rodney Booker, Job Fair attendee.

That looks amazing. I wish I lived in a barren wasteland like Arizona.

The guy says his one is street legal, because it has lights, a rear plate and a windscreen. But i'd like to check.
Also, because we're only going to be here till January and he 'doesn't really want to sell it', we thought about the idea of a sort of long term rent, where we just give him a couple of hundred bucks and he gets it back when we go. Then he gets to sell it later, and earns extra $ in the process and we don't have to worry about selling it on.
Is there a feasible way of doing this? I'm guessing we might have to agree to buy it full price, then sell it back at a fixed price for it to work.
