Diamond is the most useable, make ~2-3 of each tool (+1-2 for pickaxe) and you won't have to think about tools for some time

I did put my mining area above a huge area, Missed almost every single cave around there. Similar to you, dig in one direction then if I don't hit anything I change. Now my lowest cave have loads of slimes.

Any way to find ores for you? I've not found any diamond since the last tools I made.. and they've long since been broken.

I'm currently trying to use some of the rock I find for a small castle... Can't keep up with spending it @ my collection rate though...

If that cave was natural, surely there was some filter involved to hide bricks or you removed some... lava just doesn't hover in mid air

Oh yeah with the editor if you go inside a load of solid stone then it makes it see-through until a notable ore appears.
