You can't forget how to build a PC. It's like Lego and takes about half an hour to an hour, less if you wanna rush.
oh and is the 460 really the best all-round consumer choice card right now? i kinda assumed it was

isn't it really my discretion whether i want to build a computer or not

The 1GB version has a wider memory bus, which improved performance more than just adding more memory would. It's worth the extra £15 or so, but if you can't get the 1GB version in the bundle then just get the 768 one. But if you can get a 6850 it's actually stolen the price:performance throne.Uzique wrote:
is there REALLY that much of a difference between the 460 768mb and the 460 1gb?
ive found a prebuilt system with all the above specs for £650 but the 1gb isn't selectable as a customisable graphics card
Well the HD6870 looks like a great choice for price/performance to me. It outperforms the 1GB 460 by a fair bit for only $20 more.Uzique wrote:

my only problem is ive been without a computer for 4 weeks and dont want to wait another month for them to come into stock

They're out of stock in the UK? 6850/70 are fully stocked here

Yeah that PSU will be fine. You don't really need to fork out the extra for the Dominator RAM, something like a cheaper G.Skill set would do fine. But if you've got the money and like Corsair and go right ahead
i knew 2000Mhz RAM was pointless but is the 1600Mhz really a waste?
libertarian benefit collector - anti-academic super-intellectual. http://mixlr.com/the-little-phrase/
1600 is plenty
Last time I checked G.Skill was about $10-20 cheaper than Corsair RAM. Like LBJ said, get 4GB of that if you want to save some money.

The 6870 beats the 5770 by a bit... Yeah, fucked up naming convention. The upcoming 69XX replaces the 58XX
I'm just happy uzi will be back on TS for more shenanigans.
it's all fucking stupid now, though, with graphics cards
the 6870 and 460-470 are termed 'mid-range' cards... but they still play all new DX11 games on max settings, max AA/AF
there was a time when 'mid range' card meant 'will satisfy recommended settings on a game'
now it seems as though the 480's and whatnot are just pointless waste... by the time games reach that standard, there will be a new generation of affordable 'mid-range' cards to deal with them just fine. does that make sense?

yep.
I have a 5870. My brother has the same comp with a 5770. On most games the difference is minimal. 5770 or something similar should do you fine for the next year or so.

Uzique, at the resolution you currently play at, that 460 will be fine. It'll only be an issue at higher resolutions. The new high-end cards are high-end for the 1920x1200 plus crowd.
I'm just happy that my 295 is still holding it's own against the new high-ends...

apparently the 6870 performs better on my resolution than the 460 768/1gb, and consumes less power... win/win

Yeah, power consumption is a big sell for the 6XXX. As for fps boost, well, it's all relative. Boosting from 50 to 60 fps is good. From 120 to 130, meh.
Looks like a good build, i'm mad jelly. gimme your 8800GTXs.
probably going to order all the parts later today, eeeep
if i cant put them together for whatever reason cause i dont have the shit at my uni house... then fuck you, bf2s

A screwdriver should be all you need.
Just make sure you go in this order:
RAM on the MoBo, CPU on the MoBo, Cooler on the MoBo, PSU in the case, hard drives and optical drives in the case, MoBo in the case, GPU in the MoBo, power cables, connector cables, etc.
Also, make sure the screwdriver is a long-reach one (Maybe also magnetic) cos the screw in the top-corner of the MoBo is hardest one to get in with the CPU Cooler in, also the CPU power connector is also difficult with the cooler there.
Other than that, no difficulty.

You need a toothbrush to make sure the paste gets right to the bottom of the pins.
