dude i've used the monitor for 3 years, do you really think i'd be that fucking retarded to buy it again if it was reflecting white lasers into my eyeballs whilst gaming? "hmm the monitor is alright and all but shame about the perpetual squint..." it's glossy material casing, not a hall of mirrors. it doesn't detract at all. it's a minor aesthetic difference that has no bearing on the visual quality or user-experience whatsoever.

If you really need a monitor, I have loads of CRTs lying around. Good quality ones (iiyama, lacie etc.) that have much better image than any LCDs you'll find. Only problem is that they're pretty big and heavy.

I miss CRT's, but not their gutbusting weight or opening the chassis to adjust them.

And to a few posts above, yeah. I haven't really seen all that much difference between matte and gloss unless you're playing in sunlight or in a room with florescents all over the ceiling.

alright, so, two-fold request:

1) gimme the low-down on best CPU/GPU monitoring software and CPU/GPU 'testers' (i.e. for temps and stability). I see screenshots sometimes on overclocking websites and am just wondering what these tools are and where i can get them from, for testing my own system. because of all the fucking around and system crashes (no CPU fan was working), it has reverted to dead-standard settings and i need to reunlock it in the BIOS. i'm looking to overclock this i5 760 to around 4.0Ghz (as advertised), and i'm wondering what the best steps to do this are.

2) I have a new 1Tb drive but at the moment i'm running my old hard-drive with win7. how would i go about formatting the 1Tb drive with windows 7 and then making it my 'primary' drive? I want to run this old hard-drive as a secondarily accessible drive, but i'm looking to port all of the apps, games and whatnot to the new, faster and less-old 1Tb. a step-by-step of the best way to achieve this 'reversed' set-up (and to format the 1Tb drive) would be muchly appreciated.

+karmaz for help with either. im lazy, i know, but i've completely ran out of initiative and effort for this

Quite right.

There are two main options open to you: You could clone the drive with some drive cloning software or you could download a pirate copy of Windows 7 and use your license with that.

I would recommend the latter.

Ah - missed the "don't have any blank DVDs left". You can do it from a USB stick or drive, if you have one.

You could clone the drive. I wouldn't, as I've had bad experiences with cloned Windows installs - stuff just seems to go wrong more often with them.

You may be able to put the ISO onto a dedicated partition and boot to that, then install that way - but I've never tried that. It may or may not work.

yeah i'm skeptical of things like that... just always wondered if there was an easier way than the pirated, long-way i did things in the past

i'll just install win7 onto the new 1Tb drive from scratch and then order it as the main/primary boot device in BIOS

this 3-year old WD 500Gb is a slow piece of shit nowadays... has seen some serious use. really holding back my system.

As far as I'm aware it's only supposed to be used to transfer between the same versions of Windows (not what Microsoft claim, but it always fucks something up). Going from XP to Vista using it is asking for trouble. Win 7 to Win 7 should be fine.

Which versions were you using? Even Microsoft don't claim it works from 32 > 64 bit or vice versa - in fact 64-bit XP is not even supported.

It was 32 bit XP Pro to 32 bit Vista IIRC.

Transferred four users, two came through OK, one totally corrupted, one all sorts of weird user account problems.

is there any way to totally transfer all of that crap? will the above-mentioned windows tool do it for me?

EDIT: really frustrating problem. when i go to install ati catalyst drivers on my new 'main' 1tb drive (A:\) it says 'invalid folder'

and will not let me install it. however if i try to install it to my previous old 'main' drive (C:\)... it will do so

even though the C-drive already has all the drivers running on it - as it's my 'old' windows...

what's going on?
