All the BP stations are small bussinesses that make most of their money selling candy and soda. Very little money is made by the station when they sell gas. So you're just hurting the local economy and a small bussiness owner when you boycott their station.
too bad
Do you have any proof of this claim, or are you talking out of your ass? Didn't know you were some sort of business analyst for convenience stores/gas stations.
Tension is mounting between BP and the neighborhood retailers that sell its gasoline.

As more Americans shun BP gasoline as a form of protest over the Gulf oil spill, station owners are insisting BP do more to help them convince motorists that such boycotts mostly hurt independently owned businesses, not the British oil giant.

To win back customers, they'd like the company's help in reducing the price at the pump.

BP owns just a fraction of the more than 11,000 stations across the U.S. that sell its fuel under the BP, Amoco and ARCO banners. Most are owned by local businessmen whose primary connection to the oil company is the logo and a contract to buy gasoline.

In recent weeks, some station owners from Georgia to Illinois say sales have declined as much as 10% to 40%.

Station owners and BP gas distributors told BP officials last week they need a break on the cost of the gas they buy, and they want help paying for more advertising aimed at motorists, according to John Kleine, executive director of the independent BP Amoco Marketers Association. The station owners, who earn more from sales of soda and snacks than on gasoline, also want more frequent meetings with BP officials.

Also you don'tneed to have a business degree or a job at some business firm to have an internet connection and a dollar to buy a newspaper. Come on.

Well for one, spitting in food is on purpose and not an addicent.
For two, if you boycott a restaurant and get your friends to, you might make somewhat of a dent in their income.
For three, I wouldn't go back to the place because id be worried about the spit. Not getting my petrol from a specific station makes no differance to me, oil is oil.
For four, the restaurant staff would be punished and likely fired, after that id have no need to boycott the place. BP have lost Billions, they've paid the price.

Like I said though, its your choice.
I'd say it was a bad example then...
its not an example ffs.  its a line of thinking.
Okay then.

What statistic? You mean how the way the gas stations have to operate in order to make themselves viable?

If you mean that then: IIRC there isn't a lot of money to be made off of selling gasoline. After you find, drill it out, refine it, transport it etc. the overhead begins to mount. Oil companies make their vast profits by sheer volume. I could be wrong, John would know more then me since his brother is in the business.

Guys, guys, guys...   Let's not get excited here.  The ocean naturally has parasites that eat oil, and whatever is left after that is negligible.

The good people of the oil industry are just having a bad year.  If there's anyone we should be angry at, it should be people like James Lee and their loony environmentalism.  Let's also not forget all of those opportunistic scientists who are lying about global warming too.

If there's anything we shouldn't do, it would be to get the government more involved.  Now, remember that this still keeps the door open to criticize the government when they don't successfully clean up the oil spill within a week.

And last but not least, never blame the oil companies for these incidents.  Whenever something like this happens, it's the fault of regulators not catching safety problems, even though they shouldn't be regulating the oil industry to begin with.

The microbe was discovered by a team led by Terry Hazen, of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California. The study was reported in the Journal Science.

Don't worry turq .. that doesn't let "them" off the hook.

The vast majority of people blame the oil companies .. as they should.

There are some major differences between today's explosion and the BP disaster. For example, the depth at which they were drilling, or the fact that today's rig was not in operation, and no one died.. I point this out not to excuse what happened today, but to point out that the title of this thread is quick to make a conclusion.

... a conclusion that has already been made millions of times over.

Actually Kmar, I meant the title to be somewhat sarcastic though I think it failed in that regard.  I hadn't drawn any conclusion and if you read the (admittedly little bit) I wrote in the first post, you'd see that I was simply giving what was known and leaving open the possibility that things could get worse.

Other than that clarification, you have a good point in the rest of the post.

"British petroleum" are no doubt to blame, perhaps another boycott is due marine? That'll teach em.
i wasnt try to teach them anything.  its a personal choice.  maybe sit back and do nothing cuz thats cool.
All you are really hurting is the local store owners. BP owns very few service stations and the gas is all the same. You have NO control over wich company produces the oil you use. It ALL comes from the same terminals. You buy oil drilled by BP whenever you buy gas. No matter what station you use.
