But they can write their final paper on the beatles, yes?

Thus the degree is in a broader subject (I dunno, music), but the papers say he has a "Phd in the beatles" because they're... journalists?

I dunno, I assumed that was it when someone in the papers was presented as someone with a Phd in Harry Potter.

Are the NHS paying for her course and is she getting a job as a radiographer at a hospital afterwards?

I think so, what else can you do with a radiography degree?

Tbh I don't know, I see her as much as I see my other extended family, a few times a year.

a final paper is not a PhD. far from it. a 3rd year dissertation gets you... a bachelor's. not a masters, not a PhD.

and your PhD makes you a doctor of a SUBJECT. not a doctor of the subject of your PhD.

thus you are not Dr. Jord of Beatles Studies, you'd be Dr. Jord of Music

jens stop chatting shit about things you don't understand at all. stick to your textbook definitions, econ kid

I quite like that, yes... Dr Jord of music.

Throw in a knighthood, an obe and a VC and I got a pretty fly name.

Oh I get that.

But to get a PhD, do you not work on one thesis? So one could, when doing one's thesis within the subject of music, angle it in towards the beatles, couldn't one?

I'm just trying to figure out how the papers constantly say people have PhD's in Harry Potter or The Beatles.

a PhD is a long, sustained research project-- it differs in method/requirement depending on the course. by the time you get to PhD level you have a bachelors and (optionally) a master's in a more specific area of study. so a PhD is a very highly-specialised and honed-in piece of research on a (relatively) small part of your academic study/interest. but saying "im doing my thesis/dissertation" does NOT mean you are working on a PhD. every level of graduate-study has them.

Liq won't it be an MSc? Master of Science... not Physics

interesting. havent heard of that qualification. i typically only see MA's, MSc's, Mphils, MEcon and LL.M's...

didn't know the sciences gave specific masters like that! even a master's in english is an 'Arts' qual, not an 'Eng'

I would assume that the same applies for biology and chemistry, but I don't know.

Also I think I can actually choose what I want to have on my certificate: MPhys or MSc ... pretty sure I read that somewhere, though I might have made it up. Dunno

The Scottish system is confusing, what with their four-year bachelors and undergraduate MA's.. Their MA sounds just like a BA to me though..

It takes them 4 years to do a bachelors course because they're not as intelligent, that's all

technically i think it's impossible to do an 'undergraduate MA'... technically in your 4th year you'd be working at a bachelor's level.

there are 4-year undergraduate BA's, yes, but they normally involve a year abroad or a sandwich placement in industry/work.

every scottish qualification just sounds and seems like a throwaway GCSE to me

What's special about using 'one'?
in england its seen as a formal preservation unique to the mid-upper classes.

therefore you look like a pretentious douchenozzle using it on the internet when you're not even english, let alone english upper class.
