An Australian high school teacher caused a stir this week after asking her class to plan a terror attack that would kill as many innocent people as possible.

The students were instructed to explain how they would choose victims and were urged to devise a plan to kill as many innocent people as possible, the news agency reported.

The teacher canceled the assignment after a 15-year-old student objected to it.

I'd love to know what the educational merit of this assignment was supposed to be.

I heard this the other day.

My grade 9 english teacher said that for the class he had the year before, he made them do an assignment on planning to kill him (the teacher) and make it look like an accident. He said a few came up with some pretty crazy plans.

Wanna hear good terrorist plan? get 20 guys and recreate DC Sniper in 10 of Americas largest cities. It will shut everything down. Shit if one pair gets arrested, the other 9 pairs are still operable. 2 guys with an AR 15 going around town shutted DC down for a long long time. This will shut America down (not my idea, read it in superfreaconomics on terrorist acts).

I remember after 9/11 in school we had something like this, talking about what terrorists could do to London if they wanted to make serious damage. It involved the tube trains (bingo) but mainly using the tunnels as a system for spreading some really bad toxic gas or something rather than bombing trains. In reality though they'd need way too much gas to do it in any effective manner. Although it's not entirely impossible.

japanese terrorism was pretty much the precedent for attacks on large-cities public transport systems...

"This is one mistake by a hardworking, keen young teacher who is highly regarded by staff, students and community,'' Terry Martino, principal of the West Australian school, told the news agency.
Doesn't he mean overworked? Seriously, I can't think of any other barely-believable reason. I'm sure people have their own little plots tucked away in some dark recess of their mind, but do they really need to be brought to light by something so hideously not thought through as that? What could have possibly been her motive?

I've been covering this story for the last week at work and all I could think of the entire time was "man, why didn't any of MY teachers ever set a fun assignment like that?"

It's an engaging subject, seriously all this fake tabloid outrage is so stupid. I haven't checked the details but I'm sure this teacher was a white middle class protestant so what's the problem for you people.

I'd always thought you could cause tremendous disruption/casualties through coordinated simultaneous sabotage of railway tracks just before rush hour. Dozens of derailed trains and low chance of getting caught. Would cost a fortune to improve security around tracks nationwide.

Imagine if a teacher in the US decided to group kids up into 'cells' to brainstorm on ways the 9/11 attack could have been improved.

Yeah that's a little more personal. You're now twisting it into specifically mentioning a previous attack and then going further and talking about improving it. Like I said, fake tabloid outrage, save the children, teach them jesus and creationism. That'll help them in the real world. We gotcha.

Yeah but that didn't happen did it and this teacher wasn't all "Hey, lets think of ways the Bali Bombings could have killed even more people". I doubt this was in any way malicious, I think a teacher just wanted a way to engage their students and a morbid fascination with chaos and death is, unfortunately, engaging.
