I'll put it this way.  I think it's clear that smoking in media can influence people's decisions on a subconscious level, but I think this is the sort of thing that the market should determine -- not the government.

Basically, these activist groups are fully within their rights to lobby the industry for change, but I don't think that the government should intervene.

says you.  like i said i have seen air filters of airplanes when they allowed smoking compared to what they look like now.  not to mention air filters in homes of smokers.
So don't smoke, and feel free to preach to smokers as much as you want, but it's not your right to force me to quit.

It's a huge numbers game. Well how long was the flight? how many cigs have been smoked? I'm sure I can say orange juice and organic vegetables kill your liver if you've chugged 40 litres a day and 10 kilos of veggies a day too.

i dont.  except growing up i had to fly on planes and be in places filled with smoke.  im sure that did some damage.  so its too late for me.  if its a public health hazard then one should have the right to ban it.

For the most part, it has been proven that secondhand smoke can affect your health.  As you said, there are many variables (including the ventilation involved), but I don't think there is any question that smoke in any form is not good for you.

On the other hand, I don't think there's any question that firsthand smoke is much worse.

You can just don't get caught.

Pretty big leap you made there though.

Then don't stand next to someone smoking in a public place or get a girlfriend that smokes?

I can assume some statistics and try to "remember correctly" about air being polluted by cars/manufacturing/power plants being worse than second hand smoke. You have the option not to work in manufactuing and be exposed to that like you have the option not to stand/sit next to someone who is smoking.

Here's a statistic. 250k people a day die on average, there are bigger issues than trying to ban smoking.

no its not a numbers game.  filters get changed on a time cycle.  same time every time.  the difference is amazing.

Well if you don't mind me asking... how many cigs per flight and how long was the flight?

Well of course it's going to be dirty since we can assume that in every single flight there would be people smoking. It's not like you assume a smoker would smoke 24/7 right. Everything in moderation brah.

Too late for you? They say that even a heavy smoker will have the lungs of a non-smoker given ten years time to heal. This is why non-smokers bitching about the occasional whiff is nothing more than hot air.

"each to their own" only works when you aren't effecting other people by your actions. Smoking effects far more then yourself.

You're still allowed to smoke in uncovered public areas. So outside shops and businesses, on side walks, at bus stops and train stations, in most sports grounds, parks, playgrounds, beaches, outdoor restaurants and cafes etc Many places where it is almost unavoidable but to have to walk through or wait around a cloud of pure evil.
