Plenty of smaller town down here to match those you mention. Yer right people are friendlier, add to it, cities are cleaner, life is slower, a lot less hectic and the winters are not very harsh, the snow is white, and do not last until April. I like snow, I hate heat. I like the fast pace, slow pace is boring. People are plenty friendly up here, just have to get through their shell. Cities are not cleaner in the south.

The first part is the most important part. I despise hot, humid summers and that's all you get down there. I'd rather live in Maine where the average July temperature is like 79.

The girl I dated through high school went to college there (Carnegie-Mellon) and it had a cool small city/college town kind of feel to it. It was built as a steel town but most of our steel production has moved to China so it's been trying to reinvent itself for the past twenty years. The tech industry is what it is banking on going forward, like a mini silicon valley. Has a good public transportation system though

Uhhhnnn...somewhat, except Kansas sucks.  Sorry for the sidebar but, some of the weight should be in the ideals...no individual taxation, relative freedom from government intervention, tendency to be more independent...aka the stuff which is why people are moving here and not California.

You might think of Norway as inferior lowing but I have never made a point of how much greater we are in comparison to other countries ... again you take something out of context ... you truly are a petty character ...

A little tidbit of facts about Norway since you brought it up that we/I have a superior complex ...

*We have adapted and implemented a economy that suites us, we have taken the best from capitalism and socialism and blended it together to form a economic system that fits us perfectly, we have regulated a financial market that without those regulations would have put us in the same place as many other European countries of the same size and similar economic system ... Iceland, Denmark, Sweden as the closest.

*We have greed and we have corruption but not nearly in the same scale as you, we think it's cool that most people possible in Norway have a good life, we like to think that we as a nation is more than just individuals trying to grab as much as possible for ourselves. Has nothing to do with the size of our population or country but with our attitude towards each other ...

*We have shown that the correct use of regulation can be a success in a total economic aspect, our housing market didn't collapse, our foreign trade didn't collapse as much and none of our banks or financial institutions filed for bankruptcy ...

*In the 1980s we pretty much had a blueprint of US economy and suffered the same crisis in the early 90s, our politicians then took steps to ensure such a crisis would not happen again or that it would affect us as little as possible ... I must say their initial goal is a success ...

*To hold back in good times pays back in bad times ... we could of course have spend money like crazy with our huge fortune pr capita in oil but we didn't and that leaves us where we are today with a balanced budget and money in the bank and not a economy in chaos and a Guinness world record in deficit ...

*One simple economic principle is: Don't spend more than you earn ... that goes for both personal economy and a countries economy ...

Never claimed you had a superiority complex because you are from Norway. I said you have a superiority complex because you as an individual think you are better or smarter than someone else and routinely lay claims to this as a reason not to debate.

Everything you say about your system might be true. It also shows exactly what I am talking about. You do not spend money on things like military. Why should you, you have an entire continent to buffer any current threats, a sea to your West and fuckin' Sweden to your East, then another body of water. You let the US and other European countries ( mainly the US) spend their money on defense of Europe, while you sit back and gloat about how much money you have. Is Norway in Afghanistan, nope, Iraq, even the first time nope, but you will be there to benefit from a checked Iran when the time comes I am sure. You are not involved in anything, you take no stand or choose no sides. You fall on the side of the victors . Right or wrong do not come into play for your country. Path of least resistance does.

What about Sparta?

It was doing well without greed right up until it was burnt to the ground and it's citizens made slaves...

EDIT- after 8 pages I should probably state that I am addressing the video, specifically Friendman's claims that no society in history has deviated from a free-market successfully.

EDIT 2- Some states back in Ancient China also did it. I can't be bothered to look into it, though.

Norway's defence-spending is $687 pr capita (US $986, average is $311), of GDP we spend about 2,5% last year, the US spends just above 4%.

We share boders with Russia in the east also you know, and that huge sea to our west costs us a great deal of money to defend.

We have an exstensive defensive pact with the US, one of it's closest allies in fact ... one that has been there since the end of WW2.

Yes we are and have been since the start, a small portion of the Norwegian millitary is proffesional and those have one of the highest success-rates in Afghanistan and have time after time been commended by US millitary leaders.

First time in Iraq Norway was present with just 2 coastguard wessels.

Second time we had troops in Iraq but pulled out to focus on Afghanistan.

We have been an active member of NATO since the start and a close ally to the US since WW2

US spent around 300 billion a year AFAIK on "European Defense," including bases, wages, upkeep and financial support.

You have a nasty habit of dismissing those opinions as inferior to yours, are so set back that someone would not agree with you that it must be that person lack of comprehension, either way, your superiority complex is entertaining.

You have a defense pact with the US because WE won...As I said, Norway history is that of the path of least resistance.  You should feel provoked, but not because I am wrong, but because you need to come to grips with your country' actions and alliances. In other words, you would have no problem engaging in a "defense pact" with the 3rd Reich. Or was there another reason you fought along side Nazi Germany as well as the Allies? Wasn't sure who was going ot win?

By the way, getting back to economics, when exactly were you going to explain what economics really is since I don't understand? I mena you went to lengths to call me out on what I said it was, and yet you have never explained what you think it is.

Umm... Norway was conquered by Germany after some hard fighting in order to shore up the right flank of the Atlantic Wall.

I think you are mistaking neutral Sweden for Norway on this subject...

Actually, Finland is the only Nordic nation that actively fought alongside the Germans in WWII and that was only because Russia invaded them during the Winter War first. Denmark? Conquered. Norway? Conquered. Sweden? Neutral.
