We use a cap-full of chlorine to put in our garden fountain once in a while...

destroys all traces of algea in ~1 minute

Depends what the goo is, if its algae then bleach will kill it, if its scale then vinegar will help.

(I spent about 3 hours pouring caustic soda and boiling water into the oil vapour trap from my car once, in the kitchen sink. Housemates weren't impressed)
